The People?

By this stage of the circus extravaganza, politics degenerates into , , dirty tricks, and permanent campaigning by a government led by a messiah. Ruling by lies and cheating spreads, but the Grand Redeemer promises “the People” improvements in their daily lives. There is much talk of solutions to the headaches and heartbreaks of unemployment, inflation, unaffordable housing, and poor healthcare—but much of that is only talk.

I'm working on a blog post about Kenneth Burke's concept of the "scapegoat mechanism." Burke is very good at describing Nazi rhetorical practices. The scapegoating process might be summarized as

* Construct an ideal "We," (in our case, Americans)
* Identify problems that keep the "We" from being ideal
* Identify a group of members who can be blamed for those problems
* Loudly and vociferously identify those problems with that group
(though in fact the problems may originate within the vocal group
making the accusations)
* Purify the "We" by expunging the scapegoated group
* However, the problems don't go away, so the process begins again with
another group.

We are experiencing this in real time.

Welsh language scapegoated

Recently newspapers (including the Gruaniad and The Times) have been reporting that the power station in Wales was halted ‘because of the Welsh language’ - that is bollox. There is an excellent rebuttal in a letter to The Times (attached). I don’t expect any of the newspapers to pay any attention.

Text of letter Welsh scapegoating Sir, Hitachi halted work on Anglesey’s Wylfa Newydd nuclear project in January 2019 due to rising costs and the UK Conservative government’s failure to secure a viable funding deal, not because of concerns over the Welsh language (news, Feb 7). The company formally withdrew in September 2020. Yes, the UK Planning Inspectorate highlighted potential impacts on Welsh (and other factors) but concluded that mitigation measures were sufficient. Crucially, the final decision lay with the UK government, by which point Hitachi had already walked away. The real failure here is Westminster’s inability to back a well-planned, properly funded nuclear future for Ynys Môn. A project like Wylfa, done right, could bring secure, high-quality jobs and strengthen our Welsh-speaking communities. Protecting and promoting the Welsh language is essential for the cultural and economic future of our island, and it should be a core consideration — not a scapegoat for government failures. Exactly who/what is ‘the left’ I keep hearing about? I’d sure like to meet them. Of course, I can never meet a nebulous idea which lacks clarity. At least when I say RWNJ, I can put names in that basket. But the ‘Left’ I’m not so sure I can put names in a basket that is the cause of all our ill, fascism included. We can donbette than this. If you have a beef (and thre is plenty to choose from these days), name it, name the poeple perpetrating the deeds you find offensive. Thenwe could have a great discussion about it all. But the left? Who they? How can anyone possibly respond to that, discuss it and learn from it? That goes for the use of ‘the Right’ as well, though I’ve not been bombarded by that label.

What are we to make of women choosing Trump's toxic orbit, she asks? Her conclusion:

"Participation is a choice. Celebrating this man is a choice. Those who make that choice fall into a few categories: villains, cowards, cynics, enablers. Some are all of the above. Trump and his team may not support gender equality, and are certainly working to undermine much of the progress women have made."
