We watched "Late Night with the Devil" (2023) tonight. I posted a #5SecondMovieReview of it earlier. We enjoyed it.

However... one little thing about it is nagging at me, like a splinter in the mind's eye.

It's a period piece, set in the #1970s. The major thread of the story includes a psychologist and her sessions with a patient, which are #recorded. Part of one is played back as part of a #television show, and onscreen during that #playback is an open-reel (aka reel-to-reel) #tape #deck playing a tape.

1970s, open-reel recording - it's #retro, it's #cool, it's period-authentic, right?

I can't shake the feeling that whoever put the visual together has never actually seen an open-reel tape recorder in operation. This picture is lousy, because it's a screencap from the movie, which is supposed to be showing a television broadcast in good old analog SD - but it gets the point across.

See anything wrong?

The takeup #reel, on the right, turns clockwise, the opposite direction of the (normal) direction of the supply reel. So the tape wraps onto the inner side of the takeup reel, and ends up "inside out".

There's also no tension arm on the supply side, and an apparent #tension arm on the takeup side, but it's not actually in the tape path.

I don't think any machines were actually made like this, but I'm not an #expert. Can anyone identify the deck they butchered or digi-simmed to create this #sin against nature? 😉

Still I will always upload videos to MakerTube first. Comments will remain disabled on YouTube, I just can't stand them.

Found this beautiful machine today.

I haven’t bought it yet, but I very well may.

Even if it needs cleaning or refurb work, it’s been a while since I’ve given myself a project like this.

The owner wasn’t at the shop, so I’ll have to go back and ask about it. It was just sitting in a lower storage cabinet in one of the record stores I frequent.

Even if it’s beyond fucked and unrepairable, I’d still like it as an #art piece.
Gorgeous!

I have just written to Bobby Busnach upon discovering that one of the edits he offered me is among the retrieved but corrupted files from an overheating SSD, which crashed during the summer of 2022.

Another advantage of vinyl records is that they never crash, but many underground disco edits were only on reel-to-reel, decades later transferred to CDs.

I seize this moment to wholeheartedly convey my deep admiration for that first generation of DJs.

Holy cow! I received yesterday the #ArturiaDrumbruteImpact and the association with the #Microfreak is just amazing 🤩 I spent an evening playing some chords with the arpeggiator and playing on them using strings patches on the #Proteus/1 the results can be hypnotic and emotional. I’m amazed. I think I will get this configuration for a few days, recording the results with the #ReelToReel tape machine. It’s incredibly effective 😍🥰🤯 #dawless is the future 🤫

"Hey, I know where there are some other tapes", I told my friend Maf. "In the desk in the den, under the microwave."

We found a stack of white plastic mailers, with scrawled address and postage on a paper label. Inside each, a small tape reel.

My father's talking letters home, from when he was drafted into the US Army and went to Viet Nam.

Maf threaded a tape, and pressed Play.

The reels turned. My father spoke, younger, lonely, frightened, then crying into the mic.

In the living room of my parents' house, there was a low cabinet with boxes of music on reels.

But reels too big for this little player.

Neglected old tapes. A white Polaroid camera. Flashcubes.

The room was decorated with mostly unused swedish modern furniture. Nobody ever sat in there. Hipster friends later coveted those orange chairs.

A small black reel-to-reel tape recorder, with a compartment for 4 AA batteries. Don't have any.

Alligator clip leads to a 6V lantern battery wakes it.

Play the tape, and a forgotten elementary school friend, Brayber, recites word-for-word a comedy routine, laughing.

His older sibling's Cheech and Chong album?
