David Castleton (Author)<p>Dead Man's Walk, Newgate Prison, City of London. Prisoners would walk down this grim corridor on their way to their executions, with each arch getting narrower and narrower, symbolic of the approaching end. The last part - known as 'Birdcage Walk' - was roofed with wire netting, offering the felon their last glimpse of sky before they were hooded. Executed prisoners were buried beneath the Walk's flagstones, so the condemned were literally walking over the dead. Though Newgate is long demolished, Deadman's Walk is now part of the Old Bailey courthouse and is said to be heavily haunted. <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/gothic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gothic</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/London" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>London</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/crime" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>crime</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/death" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>death</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/psychogeography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>psychogeography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/ghosts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ghosts</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/paranormal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>paranormal</span></a></p>

David Castleton (Author)<p>The George and Vulture is a pub in the City of London. There has been an inn on the site since 1142. Records show the pub was once just called the George - the 'Vulture' part of the name is said to have come from a nearby wine merchant who used a live vulture for his sign. The venue was a meeting place for Sir Francis Dashwood's riotous and blasphemous Hellfire Club. It is mentioned at least 20 times in Charles Dickens's 'Pickwick Papers' and the Dickens family still have their Christmas Day gathering in the pub. <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/pubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>pubs</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/gothic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gothic</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/psychogeography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>psychogeography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/weird" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>weird</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/London" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>London</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>literature</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a></p>
