Re: the crash of the Delta plane at Toronto Pearson today...

In the safety briefing, they tell you that in the event that you need to evacuate the plane, you DO NOT STOP to get your carry-on luggage or anything else. You just go.

And my partner just saw video from the crash, with some asshole coming out of the plane dragging a gigantic suitcase.

The plane was upside-down, with wings broken off, and on fire. This was pretty much the textbook definition of "emergency evacuation".

Hey, jerk, what if you slowing everything down to grab your oh-so-important suitcase resulted in people behind you burning to death?

Can we find that guy, and charge him with something serious? "I'm too important to leave my carry-on behind, I don't care if it puts others at risk" is NOT OKAY.

At Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada, a Delta Airlines passenger plane flying from Minneapolis, USA, was involved in an accident. Eight people were injured, one of whom is in critical condition.

Rescue and police operations are ongoing.

Pearson's #correlation is irrelevant if you suspect that the relationship is not a straight line.

If monotonic relationship:
"#Spearman’s rho is particularly useful for small samples where weak correlations are expected, as it can detect subtle monotonic trends." It is "widespread across disciplines where the measurement precision is not guaranteed".
"#Kendall’s Tau-b is less affected [than Spearman’s rho] by outliers in the data, making it a robust option for datasets with extreme values."

#Pearson #correlation is excellent to identify outliers, as a single large value can shift the result quite dramatically.

The associated image comes from a published panel figure of a scientific paper (2020). I would refrain, however, to consider that the observed correlation has biological significance... or that it is really a correlation...
