Yora<p>I think there is a pretty big sandbox campaign structure in Scum and Villainy, with the clocks, factions, heat, and entanglements. But I might need more actual experience with the game to really grasp its full extend and potential.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/ScumAndVillainy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScumAndVillainy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/FitD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FitD</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/PbtA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PbtA</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/ttrpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ttrpg</span></a></p>

Well-suited for a group of players who are into classic dnd tropes, and buy in for distributed narrative control of the emergent fiction 1/2</p>

Artemis<p>Has anyone played Dungeon World? PhoeB-8<p>A couple of crowdfund campaigns started recently that are near and dear to me: first, just this morning, Defy the Gods! I got to play this one last fall at BigBadCon, run by the creator Chrys, and it had me captivated. I'm really looking forward to this coming out because I want to be in a campaign of it soooo bad. <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/PBTA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PBTA</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hecticelectron/defy-the-gods" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">kickstarter.com/projects/hecti</span><span class="invisible">celectron/defy-the-gods</span></a></p>
Steveg58<p>I was having a read of this essay by Bret Devereaux about the spiritual power wielded by Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings books.<br>Some <a href="https://aus.social/tags/pbta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pbta</span></a> rule-sets have a GM move "reveal a hidden truth" (to the players) and I was struck by the way this could parallel the power being discussed by Bret. I was also sidetracked into how this could be turned into a magic "system" but that is not relevant here.<br>Anyway here is Bret's essay and it is well worth reading: <a href="https://acoup.blog/2025/04/25/collections-how-gandalf-proved-mightiest-spiritual-power-in-tolkien/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">acoup.blog/2025/04/25/collecti</span><span class="invisible">ons-how-gandalf-proved-mightiest-spiritual-power-in-tolkien/</span></a></p>
Yora<p>Another thing I've seen today about the hypothesis of long running <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/ttrpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ttrpg</span></a> campaigns being favored by rules-heavy systems is that in games with fewer advancement options, player will get bored by the limited range of their characters' abilities.</p><p>I really do wonder if that could even apply to <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/PbtA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PbtA</span></a> games? The playbook traits don't prescribe what abilities a character has. They only cover the probability that an action will be a success.</p><p>Making up cool stunts as you go is the name of the game.</p>

Yora<p>Interesting take I've seen:</p><p>PbtA campaigns seem to lend themselves to shorter campaigns than D&amp;D, because you don't lose endless amounts of time on combat turns and planning.</p><p>You get the same stories done and exhausted to its full potential in so much fewer hours.</p><p>I've not played long PbtA campaigns, but I have played lots of short and medium length D&amp;D campaigns, and most of the play time has no story progression.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/ttrpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ttrpg</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/pbta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pbta</span></a></p>
