Solar-Powered Hamster Cells

"biologists took chloroplasts—the cell components responsible for photosynthesis—from red algae and injected them into hamster cells. As a result, the animal cells gained the ability to photosynthesize […] for up to two days

Lab-grown tissue sometimes struggles to grow because of a lack of oxygen, which could be solved by introducing photosynthetic animal cells."

Gizmodo · Biologists Just Created Solar-Powered Hamster CellsMany experts believed it couldn't be done, but researchers in Japan have successfully introduced chloroplasts into hamster cells.

What if we could model Alzheimer’s disease in a dish? Well now we can! 🧫 🧠

Manuel Lessi covers work from the Xu Lab describing an innovative organoid platform that captures the cellular diversity of the human brain.

Biocomputers Made of Human Brain Cells Available for Rent

“Researchers can rent cloud access to "biocomputers" from the Swiss tech firm FinalSpark for a monthly fee of $500. A low-energy alternative to AI models, these #biocomputers, or #organoids, are comprised of human #brain cells and last only about 100 days.”

Note: Organoids are artificially grown. They are not brain cells.
A jarring #headline even so.

Enhanced #replication of contemporary #human #HPAI #H5N1 virus isolate in human #lung #organoids compared to bovine isolate, BioRxIV: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

Compared virus replication & host responses in human alveolar epithelium infected with H5N1 viruses. A/Vietnam/04 replicated most efficiently, followed by A/Texas/24, then A/bovine/Ohio/24. Induction of IF-stimulated genes was lower w/A/Texas/24 & A/bovine/Ohio/24, which may indicate a reduced disease severity of these viruses.
