"The only thing we know for certain about Al is that we don't know exactly where we are going, but we are making great time." - Futurist Jim Carroll

My book Dancing in the Rain features a list of 30 Megatrends. Some folks asked me to expand on them, so I'm starting a new series today.
The first one, AI, obviously doesn't need a lot of explanation.

It's big.

It's fast.

It's not going away.

It's going to impact your life one way or the other.

It's going to have as profound an impact as the Internet has had, both good and bad.

People will endlessly debate about where it will take us.

Some are excited, many are terrified, many are both.

And the sophistication of what we can do continues to accelerate at a ridiculous rate.

As do the risks and the downside.

Ok, so with that out of the way, here's a bit more to think about. First, AI is not some weird futuristic concept - it's a pervasive reality that has already been rapidly transforming our world. I took the liberty of taking one of my recent AI keynotes and had it summarized by Google Gemini. I then fed this to gamma.app - and Megatrends#1 of how it summarized my work.

The first thing to think about is that from the seemingly mundane to the profoundly complex, AI is already deeply embedded in our daily lives. Take a look around your world - you have::

Wearable fitness trackers analyzing your exercise patterns
Chatbots that instantly answer your questions
Shopping sites recommending products based on your past purchases
Security cameras recognize unfamiliar faces or objects
Music apps creating personalized playlist recommendations
Email services categorize messages and filter spam

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. AI already powers everything around you, from autonomous vehicles and computer vision to natural language processing and virtual assistants. Algorithms are the unseen force behind Fitbits, Apple Health, Predictive Insurance, and just about everything else. In some industries - healthcare, for example - the 'algorithm' does a better job of interpreting critical data than humans do.

But that's not the key thing to think about - it's how quickly all of this is moving. It's the acceleration of everything having to do with AI that we need to think about. The explosion of AI into public consciousness isn't truly sudden. It's the result of several exponential trends converging:
Continuation of Moore's Law: The number of transistors on microchips doubles every two years, leading to ever-increasing processing power.
Collapsing Training Costs: The cost to train AI systems has plummeted dramatically. For example, the cost to train an AI system for image recognition dropped from $112.64 in 2017 to $4.50 in 2021. It's even less today.

It promises to change everything, and if we can adapt, learn, and responsibly innovate, THAT will determine our future in this rapidly evolving landscape.

As I said, we don't know where we are going but we sure are making great time!

"Megatrends are the Energizer Bunny of the future. They keep going and going, presenting opportunities for those prepared to act!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

One of the chapters in Dancing in the Rain had to do with the "Megatrends" - something I blogged about way back in May, and again a few weeks ago. Lots of folks asked me to expand on that material, and so  I'm starting a series that will cover each of the Megatrends. This will run through the next 6 weeks in my Daily Inspiration, interrupted on occasion by things that might be crossing my mind or impacting my life.

I'll be using a new AI-based presentation tool, Gamma.app, to pull together this material. It's good! Here's the Gamma summary of today's material - you'll find the full PDF here.

So why do the megatrends matter? That's because, as I note in the book and today's quote - they're the Energizer Bunny of the future, We might have a downturn, a recession, uncertainty - but the megatrends will keep marching on.

I will be taking a look at each of these trends through the next few weeks, to give you a sense of what's coming, and where the opportunities are. My goal? To get you out of your economic funk and into the mindset of where the big future is going to take us through the next 5 to 10 years! There will also be a Website at megatrends.jimcarroll.com - I just haven't built it yet!

Stay tuned!

Oh, and go and grab those sample chapters!

"There is no shortage of big opportunities. There is a shortage of bold leadership!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

One of my fellow futurists recently included this line in a post I read - "We should be pulling more photons from the sun." He wrote it as an observation when he was flying into an American city, and saw an absolute dearth of solar panels on the roofs of homes and buildings. Solar energy - the infrastructure at least - has become desperately cheap and tremendously productive, and we are missing such a big opportunity.

This idea of things we are not doing but should be grabbed my attention, of course, so I set off to take a look at the material I've written in my blog since 2002 that might fit the theme. Much of my material covers not just my Daily Inspiration posts, one of which you are reading now, but reports on keynotes, trend overviews, research summaries, and more.

And so with that, I give you this list of 𝐀 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝟏𝟎𝟏 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐍𝐨𝐰 (𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩. I used Google Notebook LLM to analyze my material, given that there are almost 5,000 posts. There is a PDF version, of course, that I also used with my new handy-dandy AI-slide generation tool that an AI helped me write - written in Python, it's become an invaluable tool. It's a BIG FILE - grab it here.

This list should inspire more bold thinking, but also some sad reflection, since it is indicative of the sad state of leadership in our world today.

“Your fuel for your future should be irrational optimism" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Fuel your day with irrational optimism. In fact, you should nurture an insane optimism, similar to how farmers must be insanely optimistic in the face of industry volatility.
Here's why you need to embrace insane optimism:

Maintaining your optimism requires you to filter out the noise of raging headlines and other negative things

You should not let volatility reshape your attitude or let noise cloud the opportunities around you

My optimism is grounded by the trends I observe in our rapidly changing world, and spotting opportunities in those trends

You must consciously choose optimism over pessimism despite the environment you find yourself in - because the alternative isn't that great!

Optimism is your fuel for your future - without it, you're running on empty

Find something to do that fuels your optimism. Writing my daily inspirational posts helps me dispel bad things and find the good in the world

Anyone focused on the future cannot do so with a foundation of negativity - recognize that reality and ground yourself within it

Regularly nurturing your optimism is like fertilizer for your soul

You must battle daily to keep your optimism intact against the forces trying to tear it down

Despite challenges, it's a great time to be alive, with accelerating science, healthcare, connectivity, and knowledge growth

Avoid surrounding yourself with negativity and those who consistently focus on the downside

Innovative organizations succeed with positive energy for new ideas and a culture of relentless optimism

Great ideas never flourish when pessimists are in control of the conversation

An uplifting, hopeful view serves as the best antidote to negative thinking and losing sight of opportunities

Surround yourself with like-minded optimists who focus on what can be accomplished rather than what should be avoided

Optimism is one of the most precious resources that you must nurture, feed, let loose, and guard carefully

Hope and optimism are among the few commodities in the world right now that are more precious than others

Hope is the foundation of how you align yourself with your future and turn it into an opportunity

In times of volatility, you must battle continuously to keep your hope intact

Optimism is your opportunity - it opens doors that pessimism keeps locked

Those who exude a positive outlook are typically on the path to success, as people are drawn to great energy and motivational thinking

The choice is yours: fuel your day with irrational optimism, or let the noise drag you down. Be optimistic about your optimism!

Futurist Jim Carroll always tries to skew to the optimistic side of the day!
