The early web was a wild, experimental playground. Hand-coded personal websites, bizarre niche forums, and communities driven by passion instead of profit. GeoCities pages, webrings, and weird Flash experiments made the internet feel like an uncharted frontier, where creativity thrived and users had real control.

Now, it's a sanitized, ad-driven wasteland. Social media giants dictate what we see, algorithms push engagement over exploration, and independent sites struggle to survive against walled gardens. The dream of a free and open internet has been swallowed by a handful of companies, turning the once-decentralized web into a corporate-controlled echo chamber.

The open web isn’t dead. It's just buried beneath algorithms and ads. Dig deeper.

🥥 Beware, gentle internet wanderer!
Visit the 11ty site of Jason Velasquez with caution and humility, or like me, you may find yourself launched on a hero's journey down a bunny trail into a magic garden.
You may wake hours -- or days? -- later exclaiming, "Who am Eye"?
And, "Where have Eye been"?
And, "How long was Eye gone"?

I just learned about Honk, a barebones #ActivityPub microblogging implementation. It's super lightweight, doesn't support likes, and reminds me of the old internet in a very charming and silly way.

The creator
@tedu has a "flagship instance" at honkasaurus.world. It looks like it will let you sign up, but I couldn't figure out how.

Anyway, just thought that was a fun little thing to share
