Quake Heroes Expo @
Cal State Northridge.

On Saturday, February 3, a special public event to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Northridge earthquake will be held at California State University Northridge (CSUN). The event is organized with City of Los Angeles Councilman John Lee, the City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department, the Statewide California Earthquake Center, and many other partners to remember the lessons and losses of 1994 and to improve safety and resilience today.

Article in The Guardian reminded me that today is the anniversary of the 1994 #Northridge #earthquake. I was living in Redondo Beach area at the time and was thrown from my bed at 4:30am to the sound of dogs barking and car alarms. My roommate yelling “weeee it’s the big one” as he and his dog rode the waves in his water bed.

The quake was the last straw. The previous 4 years in LA had been a nightmare (Rodney King’s brutal assault, OJ, fires, etc, etc) and after the earthquake I decided to abandon the California dream; by the following year I was back on the East coast.

My bedroom was on the 3rd floor, & I slept w/ the windows open to the ocean. I’d just gotten up to wee when the quake happened—I was on my way back to bed when I heard what sounded like a freight train bearing down on me. Then my house started twisting so hard I was unable to stand in it. +

The episode of is another one that hit me hard, first watching the devastation in , , especially hearing the story of the Lee family, then seeing the relentless force of the #2011 in and hearing survivor stories.

The made me cry.

I can imagine being in these situations, helpless, which is why I get so deeply affected.

The videos are amazing and terrifying records of nature's uncaring power.
