After screwing around with emacs newsticker for a while, it's pretty neat, but I think I'll stick with newsboat. Newsticker is nice, but newsboat is a lot faster, and I follow a lot of feeds. Besides, running newsboat in vterm gets me a lot of the integration anyway. :)

[Awesome RSS – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)](addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef)

Well it took some effort but now I can read Aftenposten from the terminal, with #Newsboat and #LynxBrowser.

Complications were:

1. Setting up Lynx with the right compile time and config file options for saving/loading login cookies and display of Norwegian characters.
2. Working out how to login in the first place (there is a bunch of Javascript, switching between sites and also 2FA)*.

* In the end I logged in with Vivaldi and then used an extension to export all the relevant cookies into a format that Lynx could use. It was just easier. 🤷

Well that is weird. It seems like Ubuntu removed the deb package for #newsboat from 24.04.

There is a snap but I decided just to compile from source and put it in /usr/local. While I am currently a new user, I might want to experiment with this more and I noticed the following comment on reddit,

"The snap version is a waste of time because it doesn't allow you to use custom scripts. What's the point of newsboat without custom scripts and macros?"

I'm not sure why Ubuntu feels the need to make absolutely everything a snap. 🤷

On the plus side, perhaps Canonical have seen the error of their ways on this one as I see that 24.10 has a newsboat package again. It is really just 24.04 that is missing the package.

I find it extremely worrying that no #browser can get by with less than 1 GB of RAM anymore, not even #qutebrowser. To display a bit of #html you need such bloated software? Even for dynamic content I think that's completely excessive.

Switching to #tut for #Mastodon is still easy. It gets more difficult with websites. I tried #links #lynx and #w3m. The latter is the clear winner. It can also be practically linked to my #RSS reader #newsboat. But that's not exactly beautiful. It's all very depressing. #Linux

#Linux

Terminal RSS with Newsboat
I've been falling in love with the simplicity of terminal based apps lately and that started in part with Newsboat the terminal based RSS reader I've been using for a few months. I've already written a short post about setting up Newsboat with Nix Home Manager but wanted to take a deeper dive into the tool today.

Why Terminal?
