The imperial woodpecker (“Campephilus imperialis) was the largest known woodpecker species in the world  - endemic to - with 56-60 cms. in size. It lived in the mountains of Northwestern Mexico.

Although officially registered as "critically endangered " by the IUCN, the bird was last sighted in 1957. Massive deforestation might have led to the extinction of this unique species.
