I don't think this decision to start collecting post 1900 art is good for either the National Gallery or Tate Modern.

As well as the possibility of the rivalry mentioned in the article, it will put an extra strain on the NG's research and conservation resources. In addition, the relationships and expertise required for the successful collection of important works of modern and contemporary art may well not correspond with those currently employed in building the NG's pre-1900 collections.

It should also be noted that using a new wing to display a sizeable collection of modern and contemporary art will make it more difficult to exhibit those works belonging to the NG that are currently not on display.

Tate Modern might also suffer. Although the refitted Bankside Power Station has become a major draw for visitors in itself, the Tate Modern collections of modern and contemporary art seem overshadowed by those in Paris and New York. How will the NG chasing modern and contemporary works strengthen the Tate collections?

I agree that 1900 is an arbitrary date. Instead, the dividing line should be November 8th 1910, when the Roger Fry organized "Manet and the Post-Impressionists" opened in London's Grafton Galleries and subsequently revolutionized the cultural life of Britain.
