Is there a worse fate than having the wait #muzak for the low income mental health place I use stuck in my head after hearing it twice in one phone call?
I understand the criticism against #Spotify for providing playlists with bland faceless background #muzak that they don't have to pay royalty for. But I don't understand the user behaviour that enables this scheme, where people ever dial up background muzak from Spotify. My main way of using the service is to listen randomly to my 1500 favourite non-bland non-faceless songs.
“Production Music” has been a thing long before Spotify arrived on the scene:
“The Ghosts In The Machine”, Harper’s (https://harpers.org/archive/2025/01/the-ghosts-in-the-machine-liz-pelly-spotify-musicians/).
The HN thread (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42461530) is also interesting.
"For more than a year, I devoted myself to answering these questions. I spoke with former employees, reviewed internal Spotify records and company Slack messages, and interviewed and corresponded with numerous musicians. What I uncovered was an elaborate internal program. Spotify, I discovered, not only has partnerships with a web of production companies, which, as one former employee put it, provide Spotify with “music we benefited from financially,” but also a team of employees working to seed these tracks on playlists across the platform. In doing so, they are effectively working to grow the percentage of total streams of music that is cheaper for the platform. The program’s name: Perfect Fit Content (PFC). The PFC program raises troubling prospects for working musicians. Some face the possibility of losing out on crucial income by having their tracks passed over for playlist placement or replaced in favor of PFC; others, who record PFC music themselves, must often give up control of certain royalty rights that, if a track becomes popular, could be highly lucrative. But it also raises worrying questions for all of us who listen to music. It puts forth an image of a future in which—as streaming services push music further into the background, and normalize anonymous, low-cost playlist filler—the relationship between listener and artist might be severed completely."

@randulo forcibly cheerful vacuous boilerplate non-responses… 'muzak on hold' for customer service chatbots? (who may actually be human but work to a tight script) #chatbots #muzak #CustomerService https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muzak

Hmm
okay, this is appreciated, Apple.
When you're on hold for some part of Apple support, they actually give you a choice of what kind of muzak you get (jazz classical etc) and one of the options is NONE!
I’m still trying to sort out some nonsense with the bank over a cheque they deemed fraudulent for unknown reasons. It’s not. It’s my inheritance from my deceased grandmother. They put a hold on my account for a while and I couldn’t access my joint chequing account even though I’d deposited it in my personal savings account. They contacted my husband even though I’d put it in my account, not his. Then I went to the bank in person to sort it out only to be told I had to phone a number instead.
So now I’m on hold with seriously obnoxious hold music. I have work I need to be doing, but the robot lady told me I can expect to be on hold for at least 45 minutes. There’s no option for them to call me back, instead. So I’m going to have to listen to this awful muzak for the next who-knows-how-long. To make it even worse, the volume of the shitty hold muzak keeps changing volume. I guess this is the service all my service fees are paying for.

The strange things you hear in airports.
I know it might not quite fit the #JukeboxFridayNight #Rainbows theme but this brings a peculiar kind of musical joy/horror. A genre all of its own?
It is lyric-less background #Muzak now to most people.

After another evening immersed in #DungeonSynth, I've come to the conclusion once more: DS is essentially fantasy-themed elevator music, and I love it.
