@resistor @jmc #SmartOS (an illumos distribution) powers the #mnx.io cloud and bhyve is used in several (thousands) of instances running production workloads. So I think bhyve is already production-ready in #illumos, also #illumos can do double-hulled virtualization for added security (this means bhyve runs inside a zone, so if an attacker escapes from the hypervisor he/she just lands in a somewhat useless zone), something like that in #FreeBSD was not working out of the box, the last time I checked, also networking in jails, is not as easy as crossbow in #illumos.

@jcamos @vermaden @stefano in #illumos the number of zones supported per host is 8192 , but really depends on how much resources are given to each zone. Is there a max limit for #FreeBSD jails?.I have not checked. But 8192 seems to be ok, as Joyent public cloud was running illumos and #mnx.io is running illumos as well. At least i checked today in #SmartOS and the limit is there.

@DianeBruce @jcamos @stefano I keep thinking it would be fun to have an #illumos / #sunos oriented server, but I hardly imagine there’d be many users. But maybe there are more #mnx & #oxide fans than I imagine.
But we’ve all got to follow the BSD communities since that’s were a bunch of the exciting ZFS, Bhyve &c work is happening
