#UrsulaKLeGuin’s home will become a writers residency

By HILLEL ITALIE

"Downes-Le Guin, who also serves as his mother’s literary executor, now hopes to give contemporary authors access to her old writing space. #LiteraryArts, a community nonprofit based in #PortlandOregon, announced Monday that Le Guin’s family had donated their three-story house for what will become the Ursula K. Le Guin Writers Residency.

"Le Guin, who died in 2018 at age 88, was a Berkeley, California, native who in her early 30s moved to Portland with her husband, Charles. Le Guin wrote such classics as 'The Left Hand of Darkness' and 'The Dispossessed' in her home, mostly in a corner space that evolved from a nursery for her three children to a writing studio.

"'Our conversations with Ursula and her family began in 2017,' the executive director of Literary Arts, Andrew Proctor, said in a statement. 'She had a clear vision for her home to become a creative space for writers and a beacon for the broader literary community.'"

I complain a lot about how #literarytwitter never migrated to Mastodon, but if you actually look back, you can find a lot of people who did create accounts in the November 2022 event—they just didn't stay. Probably because the literary community as a network didn't exist.

So that raises the question: at what point did the literary community develop on Twitter? It didn't exist ab initio, it developed over time. But that didn't happen here. Why?

Authors: want to know how to give your book the best chance of being chosen by Australian libraries? One of my favourite places is my local library. Not just because of all the wonderful librarians and the books I get to borrow, but I also get the buzz of seeing my own books on the recently returned shelf, or hear that my farm memoir is being enjoyed or dissected by another bookclub. This week too, Australian authors received our Lending Rights notification (the annual payment AU authors receive if there are at least 50 copies of your book available in AU libraries). There are many reasons why it's important for authors (trad and indie!) to work on building library demand for our books, and for all the writers who have asked me how to go about it, I've created a handy online course with all the info, tips, links, registration pages, list of distributors, marketing ideas and downloads you need to give you and your book the best chance at Australian library success. You can access the course at www.boldauthors.com - hope it helps you achieve your goals!
