"It was change that won it." says Hinsliff.

Continuing "What kind of change exactly had by that point almost ceased to matter. Anything but this, millions of us told ourselves, as we scattered our votes in all directions."

And now this is where we've reached...

"There was never going to be a good way of saying that a Labour government is taking money away from people who can’t wash themselves below the waist without help, or go to the loo alone."

The Guardian · Rachel Reeves swears this is not a return to austerity. What matters is that it feels like oneBy Gaby Hinsliff

I bet he isn’t sorry really. The rationale behind this budget and other financial decisions made by the Chancellor, and previous chancellors is clearly that they believe we all have some kind of magic money tree, and hidden incomes that we live on; only accessing our ‘pocket money’ for kicks.
I think it’s time there was a televised test for aspiring politicians [renewable every ten years] that they must live in the circumstances and the incomes they expect the rest of us to - with no external support from family or associates. Live in a suitable rundown property with an unpleasant landlord, high rent, poor access to public transport, penalties for turning up late, etc. And they must do so for a minimum of six months.
His ‘pocket money’ comment shows how completely divorced from reality these politicians are. #UKPol #LINO #Austerity #Labour

The Spring Statement: the view from Blackpool....

For the already vulnerable & impoverished, austerity never went way & so cannot return... its just how society structures their lives.

Callous & brutal politics now seems to be the norm, with the only people whose sensitivities are considered are the wealthy & influential.... no wonder the hashtag #LINO (Labour in Name Only) is gaining traction

The Guardian · ‘People have been pushed to the brink’: welfare cuts spark fear in BlackpoolBy Hannah Al-Othman

The Institute for Government;'s summation of Labour's position:

'there is a real risk that [the Labour Govt.] falls into the same trap as previous Conservative administrations: cutting spending in the short-term before hurriedly & haphazardly injecting cash into services when performance becomes politically unacceptable'!

The phrasing 'previous Conservative administrations' suggest someone on the IfG's team is thinking of 'Labour in Name Only'!
