#Maine rejects #JusticeDepartment’s request for all #voters’ personal info, list of election officials

Secretary of State #ShennaBellows' responded to the request by telling the DOJ to "go jump in the Gulf of Maine."

by Dylan Tusinski, July 29, 2025

AUGUSTA — "Maine is denying the U.S. Department of Justice access to its voter registration records, state officials said Tuesday, rejecting an unprecedented request for sensitive voter data that the Trump administration has now delivered to all 50 states.

"A letter late last week to Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and signed by Deputy Assistant U.S. Attorney General Michael Gates claims Maine had roughly 11,000 voters with duplicate registration. It requested the state’s entire voter registration list dating back to November 2022 'to ensure that ineligible voters are being removed.'

"The state has 14 days to respond to the letter dated July 24.

"Bellows, who is also a Democratic candidate for governor, said in a press conference Tuesday the Trump administration is overstepping its bounds, empowering false narratives and 'trying to change the topic away from the Epstein files.'

" 'Article 1 of the Constitution places the states — not President Trump, not the federal government — in charge of federal elections,' she said. 'The DOJ doesn’t get to know everything about you just because they want to.'

"Bellows’ office is coordinating with Maine’s Office of Attorney General to draft a formal response, she said.
The Maine Republican Party has previously claimed widespread voter fraud across the state, but a subsequent investigation by Bellows’ office concluded this month and found those claims were baseless. Just because someone is registered to vote in two different towns doesn’t mean they intended to vote twice. Often, it simply means that they moved between elections.

"A spokesman for Maine Senate Republicans declined to comment on the DOJ’s request or Bellows’ response. Other Maine GOP officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

"In addition to #VoterRegistration information, the DOJ also has requested the names of local election officials as well as information about noncitizens, felons, and deceased people’s alleged participation in Maine elections following President Donald Trump’s repeated false claims that the 2020 election was rigged and stolen from him.

" 'Please provide a description of the steps that Maine has taken, and when those steps were taken, to identify registered voters who are ineligible to vote as well as the procedures it used to remove those ineligible voters from the registration list,' the DOJ’s letter reads.

"The DOJ has not publicly said why they are seeking voter records across the country. Asked about the request to Maine and other states, spokesperson Pierson Furnish replied in an email 'No comment.'

"The first Trump administration similarly made requests to view all Americans’ voter information in 2017. Then-Secretary of State Matt Dunlap said at the time he would release voters’ names, ages, residences and districts with the government, as allowed by Maine law.

"The American Civil Liberties Union [#ACLU] of Maine said the DOJ’s actions both now and then are part of 'a clear pattern of intimidation' and applauded Bellows’ refusal to share voters’ information.

" 'This letter also fuels #FalseNarratives that sow distrust in our elections. Maine elections are safe, secure, and accessible, and that’s why Maine consistently has some of the highest voter turnout,' said Samuel Crankshaw, the group’s communications director. 'Our government should focus on helping more people exercise their fundamental rights.'

Maine’s voter turnout is reliably high compared to other states and more Mainers voted in 2024 than in any election before, according to state voting data.

"The Justice Department initially reached out to swing states like #Michigan, #Arizona and #Wisconsin, where local election clerks have reported federal agents requesting broad access to the states’ #RegistrationRolls and #VotingMachines.

Now, Bellows said all 50 states have received similar letters. #Maine, #Minnesota and #NewHampshire are the only states to have rejected the requests so far."

It's been a long while since we've checked in on Downmarket Mussolini's ongoing attempts to rig American elections, for either himself or other fascists in his party. I understand that many people are looking at a term limited, 79 year old fascist running a cult of personality and counting on time or circumstance to nip this problem in the bud, but that's pretty shortsighted in my opinion. This larger fascist movement's stated ambitions to permanently rig the American electoral process for fascists, as laid out openly in Project 2025, is a threat that exists beyond Trump's political career or lifespan.

As such, I think a recent New York Times report that Pork Reich officials have told Justice Department lawyers to explore whether or not they can criminally charge election officials for failing to "safeguard" their voting systems, should probably be generating more alarm than it is. And as it turns out, the extremely libbed up senior legal columnist at The New Republic, Harry Litman agrees with me.

The Little-Noted Trump-DOJ Move That Should Scare the Hell Out of You

"Democracy can weather a lot of damage and unlawful conduct at Trump’s hands, but if he succeeds in taking control of the machinery of elections, it could be a fatal blow.

That’s why a barely noticed story in The New York Times last week was so worrisome. As reported by the Times, unidentified senior administration officials have directed DOJ lawyers to explore the possibility of federal criminal charges against state or local election officials deemed to have failed to adequately safeguard computer systems.

Tellingly, the initiative isn’t grounded in any new evidence, data, or legal theory. It’s not about truth or justice. It’s a political and ideological ploy, reportedly incubated in the Project 2025 workshop—part of Trump’s broader effort to delegitimize democratic institutions and seize autocratic control."

I can literally hear you groaning "not this bullcrap again" through the screen dear reader, and I absolutely share your exhaustion - but yeah, as far as I can tell Trump is re-litigating the Big Lie to rig future elections for nazis. Furthermore, while I categorically reject Litman's assertion that a threat to democratic rights in an oligarchy lead by politicians almost universally owned by reactionary billionaires regardless of party, somehow supersedes all the other civil and human rights the regime is openly violating in importance (I imagine migrants being kidnapped and shipped to concentration camps in South Sudan might quibble with that statement too), I think we can all agree that sham elections that can only be won by Trumpenreich nazis would be a fucking disastrous outcome for American society. A good example of how such a political system would function in practice, would be Russia under Putin and I don't think there's anyone in the broader antifascist coalition in America willing to argue Russian elections are "democratic" in nature.

In terms of the operational mechanics, it's not hard to see that this whole scheme is basically a reanimation of every white supremacy-infused election conspiracy theory the larger right wing coalition behind the Republican Party has been pushing for decades, with a special emphasis on Trump's 2020 Big Lie propaganda. The regime is essentially arguing that corrupt election officials are rigging the computers for their opposition, and threatening criminal prosecution for nebulous enough crimes that they can pretty much target anyone who serves up an election result Trump does not like. No, that's not hyperbole - Litman agrees here too:

"Now, with the backing of a major-party nominee and the muscle of right-wing media, Trump is threatening to turn that isolated smear campaign into standard operating procedure. The message is simple: Help run an election that Trump loses, and we will come for you.

And, tragically, it may be working. Across the country, election officials have resigned in droves. Offices that were once nonpartisan and low-profile have become hotbeds of threats and suspicion. Trump has already browbeaten major law firms and entire universities into submission."

Please keep in mind that this intimidation and operational stacking of election boards is part of a much larger project, fueled by both the Big Lie and Project 2024, to control the election process across the country by this same fascist movement and political party. None of this is hypothetical, they're just now adding the full force of the fascist state and American legal system to the scheme. It's not MSNBC lib hysteria to say Trump is absolutely trying to rig US elections because Trump, the Republican Party, and the larger fascist movement in America have *been* trying to do precisely that - brazenly so, since January 6th, 2021.

These nazis are serious. Are we?

The New Republic · The Little-Noted Trump-DOJ Move That Should Scare the Hell Out of YouThe Justice Department is looking at criminal charges against local election officials who don’t “safeguard” their systems. And yes, it’s as bad as it sounds.
