Primarily known as an artist, he was a polymath who studied zoology, botany, mathematics, and geology, and discovered a new species of salamander, and published in Mexican scientific journals.His art used the Mexican landscape as a symbol of national identity, and he was first Mexican artist to achieve international fame.
