Interview
Françoise Sagan (1935-2004)
"How do you explain the enormous popularity of your novels all over the world?"
Sagan: I don't explain it.
"Why are your books filled with melancholy, a certain sadness, as French say, 'tristesse'?"
Sagan: I don't think my books are sad.

Breathless (1960)
You: An outrageously hot 30yo woman on #OkCupid with zero written bio but myriad SCANTILY CLAD photos.
Me: A morbidly obese 58yo man with an abdominal hernia that makes #Kuatu look like #JeanSeberg and a penchant for #Cosplay
You: Hey, sexy!
Me: *thinks* No, I'm sure this is legit.
the FBI (more specifically, j edgar hoover) had a good go at ruining her because **she supported civil rights, indigenous peoples & the black panther party**. they planted vicious stories in
newspapers & sought to slander her.
ultimately, they succeeded. by 1979, she’d had enough & went out on her own terms. alongside her work in ‘lilith’, ‘la ligne de demarcation’, ‘pendulum’ & ‘bonjour tristesse’, i hope the world remembers her very kind heart & fierce soul.

she was just another midwest, corn-fed starlet without any real substance, right? nope - & **she’s never really had the credit she merits** - for enduring.
for her emotional strength against abusive partners, both professional & amorous.
for her talent & for her compassion.
jean wanted a just world, so i'll do my bit to ensure that nobody forgets that. she joined the NAACP when she was 13 &, when she made her money, jean gave it to organisations that were fighting for equality.

#art #history: whenever i question what a government is capable of perpetrating in the service of self-preservation, i remind myself of what the FBI did to jean seberg (born #otd in 1938). for the things he did to her, to fred hampton & to the black panther party: fuck j edgar hoover forever.

Kristen Stewart – „Jean Seberg – Against All Enemies“ (2019)
(ARD)
3 things about Otto Preminger’s BONJOUR TRISTESSE [1958]
1. Deborah Kerr’s cashmere (?) car dress in ivory.
2. The patio at twilight. On the right, the group tanks up prior to their trip to the casino; on the left, the housemaid swigs a beer while standing behind the bar.
3. Subterranean powder room with an asymmetrical mirror.
Chien blanc (2022)
★★☆☆
La mise en scène soporifique dessert le film dans son ensemble, dommage.

The original Airport (1970) is quite different from the sequels. It isn't a disaster movie as such. It's an aviation thriller (and a good one) but mostly it's a typical Ross Hunter-produced melodrama. And it's thoroughly enjoyable melodrama.

#ÀboutDeSouffle aka #Breathless (1960)
A small-time crook hunted by the authorities for a car theft and the murder of a police officer, attempts to persuade a hip American journalism student to run away with him to Italy.
This evening's viewing distraction, some classic 1960 French New Wave with À bout de souffle, which means the always brilliant Jean-Paul Belmondo & Jean Seberg looking stunning in that (then daring) pixie haircut.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1938, actress #JeanSeberg was born. She made generous contributions to #NAACP and the #BlackPanthers. In response, #FBI's #COINTELPRO planted false stories in the media that finally drove her to #suicide in 1979.
