#SergeGainsbourg #Cannabis #JaneBirkin #AnneGermain #Soundtrack #Psychedelic #Rock #Orchestra #FunkRock #JazzFunk #EasyListening

As randomly chosen by survey* on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 866 on The List, submitted by leonardo.

I assumed I knew nothing of this musician and composer, as the name, face, and sound didn’t ring any bells whatsoever. But then Wikipedia told me that Tiersen did the score/soundtrack for the French film Amélie! Mon dieu, I love Amélie!

While only one or maybe two tracks on this album remind me of Amélie, it does makes me think it could be a soundtrack to an as-yet unseen film. It’s positively full of absolute gems and a whole swirl of moods, and it also features a nice handful of collaborators including Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, Stuart A. Staples of the Tindersticks, and the legendary Jane Birkin.

Given that Tiersen’s work apparently is often compared with that of Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, it’s safe to say that his work is right up my alley. I plan on checking it all out, tout de suite, starting with his most recent work up on Bandcamp. In fact, as I am writing, I randomly clicked on the cover I liked best in his BandcampPortrait (2019) – and the very first song features not only Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))), but also harpischord. I’m in love.

*The survey choices that led to this spotlight were “D”, “A”, and “Y”, following the earlier surveys with “B”, “L”, “U”, “E” and “M”, “O”, “N”. The third letter was the winning selection, so the survey result was translated as picking the third album in The List by an artist whose name starts with the letter “Y”.

Moi Non Plus (Stereo Remaster) - Invidious invidious.nerdvpn.de/watch?v=R #music #France

A slight revision of the Sally as Melody Nelson image. In yesterday's take we hadn't quite got the tension in the shoulders or the hip angle correct, and improving that makes the pose far more expressive.

Interestingly, I had to switch off some of the pose limits on DAZ3D to make it possible to get the set of Jane Birkin's upper arms. Well, I thought it was interesting anyway.

A few months ago, we were talking about Ozon’s “Swimming Pool”, then of Charlotte Rampling, and of her obituary to Jane Birkin, then how those two British ladies of similar fates both acted in movies titled “Swimming Pool”. That conversation led to a decision of having a “Swimming Pool” double-bill evening. But then summer came and days are longer, evenings begin at 10. We could only watch the first one, which none of us had seen before.
