#Compassion (#karuṇā) and loving-kindness (#mettā) are central in #Buddhism, seen not just as emotions but as cultivated dispositions rooted in the doctrines of non-self (#anatta) and #interdependence. Their practice bridges ethical conduct and meditative insight, forming the foundation for both personal transformation and social action. In this post, we explore their philosophical underpinnings and practical implications in the Buddhist tradition:

#Buddhism does not demand denial of the #body or suppression of emotion. It asks instead for sincerity, gratitude, & recognition of our #interdependence. Kōdō teaches that queerness is not an obstacle to #Buddhism — it is part of life’s richness. To him, #Buddhist #compassion embraces everyone without condition. His presence affirms this #inclusivity, reaching young queer people who may never have seen themselves reflected in religious spaces. (4/5)

In these challenging days, it can be helpful to consider the experience of environmental and social justice, Indigenous, and other movements in resisting oppression and creating alternatives.

The latest post suggests some local activities and groups that invite people to connect, imagine, and act to support each other and nurture a better world into being: greenlivingottawa.com/2025/04/

A friend recently wrote this post and I wanted to share:

" “Pace yourself”, people say, “it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon."

But the truth is, it’s a relay. You do your best, for as long as your energy holds, and then pass the baton to someone with fresh energy. And go rest and regroup, reflect and recover until you’re called upon again.

Pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion may train runners but it’s a bad strategy for activists and volunteers, for creatives, for caregivers and coworkers.

Interdependence doesn’t get enough credit in our competitive, egocentric culture. But if we take turns making a difference, the cause keeps moving forward."
