How come there are no open-source 2D printers?

We have all this open-source hardware—3D printers, soldering irons, single-board computers, and even some phones.

But there’s still no DIY/open-source printer that lets you use any ink without hacks or tricks, one that’s easy to upgrade and expand, without forcing you to buy all kinds of proprietary nonsense. Why?

I wish I had enough knowledge to start such a project. Hopefully, one day I will.

Let's start a discussion!

What do you think are the biggest challenges in creating an open-source 2D printer? What solutions could help overcome them?

Need help resetting error P07 on a Canon Pixma MG3150 multi-function printer. I’ve cleaned the ink absorbers but need to reset the error code else the device won’t do anything. My parents only need it as a scanner but it won’t even do that while this code is in effect.

Have tried guides for similar printers but none work. I can get into reset mode but can’t find the combination to reset the error after that.

Like seriously, I'm not a prophet, but a #Linux #Sysadmin but when I tell people "#Inkjet #printers are a scam!" it's fucking grounded in reality.

  • The only reason I still have a shitty #Deskjet6122 is because that fucker refuses to die!...

Same goes for a shitty #OfficeJet #MFP who's sole purpose is to to be a #Scanner...

So yeah, espechally for #Printing, just get yourself a #refurbished #Xerox #WorkCentre or something cuz #Toner can't dry out and it'll be cheaper no matter if you print one page per year or 1.000 in a single day!

I doubt people realize how significant the #ureprap by @vik would be.

To make it crystal clear - it means 3d printing #inkjet cartridges. Yes. The goddamn inkjet cartridges everyone hates so much. The ones that cost more than the printer itself. THIS is something worth fighting for. :D

(Not even mentioning everything currently done with mems from accelerometers to lab-on-chip made at home)
