I'm a little late for those on the Eastern half of the globe, but for everyone else, a reminder that tomorrow (February 1st) is Hourly Comics Day!

What is Hourly Comics Day (HCD)? Every Feb 1st, artists all over the world take on the challenge of chronicling their day in comic form, one quick, sketchy comic per hour of wakefulness. It’s a challenge, but a fun one, and it’s a great way to get to know your fellow cartoonists!

You can do one panel each hour, or more, depending on what works for you, and it can be as sketchy and unfinished as you like. For examples, just search the Hourly Comics Day hashtags to see some from previous year's:

Many people also use the shortened #Hourlies to refer to HCD.

Lots of Pokemon Sleep and Pokemon Go, watching youtube.com/@BarryWasStreaming to get me through the work day, youtube.com/@TastingHistory for lunch, maximumfun.org/podcasts/oh-no- in the evening, and icantsleeppodcast.com/ before bed. All of these, I highly recommend watching or listening to!

Black and white hourly comics split into panels by hour. 8am, my alarm goes off. I play Pokemon sleep with my spouse. I put on my T-gel, I have tea and breakfast while reading my RSS feed. 9am, I check my emails and make tasks in Notion. I start sketching my NDA work. Max yells “OH FUCK!” I ask “What’s wrong?” Xey respond “We left the brie out!” I say “Oh no!” as we both look at the sad brie. 10am, my narrative director says “Can you make this pose more intense?” I do sketch revisions, the sketch now has a devilish grin. I grin like the sketch saying “Much better!” 11am, sketching more poses for work and listening to Barry play Chrono Trigger! Barry says “Frog!” from my computer.
12pm, I have my arms up saying “Lunch time!”. Max is still in a long meeting, xey say “Data!” in the background. Back to sketching until xey’re done… Lunch is on hold. (note: my spouse is trying out a new name) 1pm, lunch time for real! Featuring tuna melts and watching Tasting History. Lunch time 2km walk, we’ve been doing routes daily in Pokemon Go. I’m saying “5 degrees celcius my butt! It’s cold!” as we walk. 2pm, back to work and watching more Barry playing Chrono Trigger. Barry says “Robo?!” from the screen. As I sketch I think “I should play more games since I’m working on them now.” 3pm, I’m leaning back in my chair as I read my narrative director’s message saying “Can we try a more neutral pose? Not angry, but not happy either?” I’m thinking with a focused face, but I’m not angry.
4pm, I’m at my computer sending a new file, saying “How’s this?”. My narrative director responds with a boop! “Yes! Thanks, Jey! You’re a superstar” I lean back with my hands on my cheeks saying “yay!” there’s a bunch of stars around me. 5pm, I’m in the shower from the shoulder up, thinking “TTRPG campaign thoughts. How should I tackle this part? Maybe this NPC could-” Then I’m cooking butter chicken on the stove as Max leans in saying “It smells so good!” 6pm, butter chicken and Delicious in Dungeon episode 5. Then working on my hourlies while Max plays Stardew Valley. BOOM! Max says “My tree! My tapper!” as we watch a tree on xer farm get zapped. 7pm, working on hourlies still. 8pm, listening to Ross and Carrie while eating cake with homemade jam. I’m leaning back on the couch eating. There’s a speaker saying “Spreadsheets!” while Max leans forward saying “Spreadsheets!” and I say “Spreadsheets!” more quietly. 9pm, more Ross and Carrie and hourlies. I’m drawing and saying “'That’s just a number!' is such a good response!” while Max is cross stitching. I feel my throat with a smile thinking “Oh! I’m really feeling a difference in my vocal chords!” 10pm, Max and I holding up our nearly finished projects saying “We did art!” Then I’m at my desk flossing my teeth and submitting a comic to the Mini Comics Awards. 11pm, Max and I are in bed laughing saying “Snails! Snails” as my phone reads out “This week’s episode comes from the Wikipedia page titled Snails.”
