Even though I agree with many of the arguments advanced by J S Mill in favour of freedom of expression, I recognize the complexity of the issue; appeals to the US First Amendment as some quasi-scriptural text that definitely settles all disputes about freedom of expression exasperate me.

Nevertheless, I agree with those Americans and others who condemn on free speech grounds UK laws outlawing expressions of support for Hezbollah.

I'm sure that many of those who have suffered at the hands of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel, and beyond* find Kneecap's support for the organization deeply offensive. Yet banning expressions of political opinion on the grounds of them being offensive, racist, or antisemitic strikes me as requiring extraordinary justification if we are not to undermine the legitimacy of free expression in general.

Make no mistake -- I don't think the issues are simple here, and will certainly not be resolved by citing apocryphal quotations from Voltaire. Rwanda, Bosnia, Germany, and - of course - Northern Ireland all illustrate just how cautious one has to be about condemnations and cries of "no censorship".

I should also add that I dislike Kneecap's politics. I wish the Metropolitan Police were not pursuing this case in part because the charges provide the group's puerile and distasteful attention seeking with additional publicity and an unmerited dignity.

I also wonder whether this is the best use of limited police time and resources. Haven't the Met got more important villains to chase?
