When adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP), the article’s framing collapses entirely. In PPP terms, groceries are over 7 times cheaper in China and more than 4 times cheaper in Mexico than in the United States. The illusion of affordability evaporates when the real cost of food is measured not in dollar amounts but in what those dollars can actually buy. A PPP-adjusted food burden analysis reveals that the U.S. and Canada impose the heaviest food burdens on their populations when measured in real consumption power. The article’s framing is thus revealed for what it is: a repackaged apology for a system that extracts more while delivering less.

IS DONALD TRUMP JUST LYING OR IS THIS CONFABULATION, A CONDITION THAT RESULTS FROM BRAIN DAMAGE?
Mastodon Post

Is your grocery bill going down? The quart of milk I just bought is up 50 cents from my prior purchase. Is your price of gas $1.99? I regularly walk by a filling station. The price was at a recent low of $2.69 and it has since crept up to $2.82.

Of course the main point here is that Trump plans to starve the poor and those working paycheck to paycheck to bring down grocery prices. First, that wouldn't work as he says. Second, as Erika Jordan would say, Trump sure is comfortable with cruelty.

This is a really great blog post. I started reading it to find out who had the cheapest groceries, but the gold is at the end.

Market Basket is the answer for cheapest groceries, but she tells the story of the Market Basket strike at the end and it’s totally worth reading.

THIS IS WHAT WE NEED ON A NATIONAL LEVEL: (below is part of the story in the link)

“They issued the world’s shortest list of demands: “We will not work for anyone but [Arthur T. Demoulas.]”
The new co-CEOs, deeply misreading their situation, attempted to sternly scold their brand new underlings back in line. They fired several of Arthur T.’s most loyal store managers.
This was a mistake.
The employees responded, literally: “This is our fucking company.” And instituted the largest non-union walk-out in American history. Implausibly, giraffes became the symbol of the Market Basket revolution. Because the employees chose to “to stick their necks out” for their chosen leader.
The walk-out was beautifully planned to protect the greatest number of the chain’s most vulnerable employees. Tenured full-time support staff walked out, leaving stores technically open, so that hourly workers could continue being paid. But the shelves were soon completely empty.
The customers join the revolt
Instead of being annoyed by the disruption at their beloved stores, customers understood what was at stake—and they opted to join the fight.
In solidarity with workers, customers shopped elsewhere. They brought their reciepts from those other grocery stores, and taped them on the windows of the technically open (but completely barren) Market Basket stores to demonstrate their commitment to holding the line.
Customers even organized and held their own concurrent rallies. I remember driving past the picket lines, honking my horn in support. It had an almost carnival-like atmosphere. It was truly incredible.”

To Hell and Back for Cheap Groceries: The Epic Investigation (and Shocking Results) of My Grocery Store Price Comparison Quest bitchesgetriches.com/grocery-s

Bitches Get Riches · To Hell and Back for Cheap Groceries: The Epic Investigation (and Shocking Results) of My Grocery Store Price Comparison QuestI took 1 shopping list to 17 grocery stores over 3 days. Here are the winners, losers, and secrets I discovered about cheap groceries.

Okay, per my previous post about scam, shell-game pricing at Safeway (and likely other company chains like Albertsons and Vons, but I haven't checked), I made a statement that on any given day you could pay 100% more for the same ounce of soda depending on sales and container. But that was just a guess, and I hate guesses. So for science (and for you) I went back to Safeway to check today's price on an ounce of Diet Pepsi, and boy was I wrong...
Today you can spend 483% more for the same ounce of Pepsi! Photo evidence provided. Maximum cost, 14.5 cents per ounce regular price in a poorly named mini-can, and minimum price (3 cents per ounce) in a 2 liter bottle with a loyalty card. And if you don't like those prices, Safeway offers a whole RANGE of prices scattered through the middle! Something for everyone!
And if you DO like those prices, don't get used to them, because they'll certainly be different in a week, and they might be different tomorrow. You don't KNOW! Like I said, shell-game.
(To be fair, I didn't check individual containers for sale in cold cases at the register, and I didn't take the time to price Coke, since Pepsi is what I usually buy, so there are other prices for sugar water and sugar-free sugar water we could be talking about as well.)

Easter Sunday is this weekend, and current prices at my grocery store are just like they are before Thanksgiving.

Suddenly all the items you need for a feast are deeply discounted: asparagus, broccoli, potatoes, beans, even corn on the cob! (not sure where they grow it in the US this time of year, but cheaper this week than many weeks last summer!)

Baking supplies are much cheaper too—flour, chocolate, butter (Kerrygold is usually $1/oz, this week it was $5/8oz)

What about dog food?

"When will depend on how much any particular company ordered early. Target officials, for instance, said during its most recent earnings call last month it ordered more in January to get in warehouses.

"But Brian Cornell, CEO of the Minneapolis-based retailer, said last month people will see price increases on items like produce quickly because they don’t have a long shelf life. Many berries, peppers and tomatoes come from Mexico and have faced a 25% tariff since early March."

Strib: Groceries likely will cost more next week, clothing more by summer
