The red coloration is caused by salt-loving bacteria that thrive in the water’s high salinity. The lake is actually half red and half blue — it’s divided by a causeway that isolates the northern arm seen here, allowing the salt content to reach saturation levels, while the southern arm is fed by fresh river waters and remains blue.
