The Great Backyard Bird Count is taking place this weekend (14th-17th). It’s an international bird count meaning wherever you are you can take part!

If you already use Cornell Lab’s Merlin ID app or the eBird app your results will automatically be submitted over the weekend.

I missed the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch (the UK survey in January) so this is another chance to get involved.

This killdeer showed a real lack of situational awareness: came prancing up to me as if the chain link fence between us made me invisible! Maybe e was just very eager to be counted in the #GreatBackyardBirdCount!

The Great Backyard Bird Count

Counting on and off one day this weekend and I counted 7 species, 65 birds coming and going from our backyard feeder.

7 Tree Sparrow, 14 Black-eyed Junco, 5 Mourning Dove, 4 Bluejay, 20 Starling, 7 Cardinal, 8 American Goldfinch

I did capture a few of these with the camera, Goldfinch, Cardinal, and a Tree Sparrow.

#GreatBackyardBirdCount special visitors today included a Cooper’s Hawk (being seen off by our Crow Neighborhood Watch) and a pair of chestnut-backed chickadees, possibly the first time I’ve seen them in my yard!

The second day of the #GreatBackyardBirdCount is off to a good start.

First day of #GreatBackyardBirdCount prohibitively windy in my town: no birds about! I thought about going to a sheltered park, but succumbed to hobbity feelings about staying indoors and puttering cozily while the wind wuthers.
