PPN<p>The <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> SLGH027 is pretty much exactly what you would expect from any reference of the Evo9 collection: Evo9 case, 40mm, ever brilliant steel, 9SA5 caliber. The only notable novelty is the new icy-blue Mt Iwate dial which differs a lot from 1st gen Mt Iwate pattern. The SBGW323 is a very straight forward dress watch running on caliber 9S64 with no date, a beautiful purple kiri dial and a comfy 36mm 44GS case made of steel. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>There is obviously a huge difference in size between the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> SLGC009 and SLGB003. 43mm vs 37mm. If you have seen the original Tentagraph SLGC001, the newer SLGC007 is basically a variant. Surprisingly light thanks to titanium. Beautiful Mt Iwate pattern dial with panda-style configuration. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>My impressions of the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> SLGC009:<br>- it is indeed huge and thick, very hard to wear if you have smaller wrists<br>- it is definitely a statement piece to show off with aggressive lines and angular case<br>- dial pattern will be a bit divisive but it does look better in person<br>- rubber straps help a lot with the odd shape of the case and lugs, not sure what would happen with any other straps<br>- chronograph pushers are very satisfying, finishing is top notch <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>What I meant by “unreleased” is every single reference <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> introduced during Watches and Wonders 2025. Even today some of them are still not available yet 😅. My impressions of the SLGB003:<br>- dial is much more beautiful in person than in photos<br>- Spring Drive UFA 9RB2 looks and sounds impressive on paper but I obviously couldn’t judge the 20s/year accuracy rating<br>- bracelet with on the fly micro-adjust is long overdue and easy to use once you get the hang of it <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>I just realized that I have never written anything here about earlier in late April when I visited the flagship boutique of <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> in Ginza, Japan. My attendant Saya-san, who by the way was wearing the first Grand Seiko from 1960, noticed my interest in GS and the fact that I was wearing the SBGH339 exclusive to Studio Shizukuichi. He proceeded to pretty much give me full access to the best stuff released and even unreleased yet 😅 <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>Of course, if you have seen my post from a few days ago, you know that the true gem of the event for me was the watch I acquired there: a vintage <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> from 1989, reference 9587-8000 also now known as SBGS003 in modern naming convention. Very thin (7mm) and accurate (rated 10s/year) thanks to the caliber 9587, the ancestor of the 9F movements. 95GS case of 37mm in diameter. Champagne dial. Comfy and intricate links. Just an incredible watch. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>

PPN<p>The <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> SBGH339 is actually the 1st Japanese watch I have owned that comes with a deployant clasp. One detail I got used to is that unlike most Swiss brands, the Japanese are wearing it “inverted” ie. the long tail is coming inwards to 6 o’clock. After a few weeks it seems perfectly normal and I actually prefer it that way now:<br>- it is more comfortable<br>- it is easier to put/remove because it is the same way single clasp bracelets work<br>- it looks better<br><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>Out of curiosity 2 weeks ago I asked the question of eligibility to the local GS9 club when buying the model exclusively sold at Studio Shizukuichi Japan. In theory one can only be eligible if one buys from a local AD or boutique but they were willing to make an exception in my case since it cannot be bought anywhere else in the world. And today they kept their words and approved my application. I am not sure what membership entails yet though 😁. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>I tried swapping the leather straps and the bracelet between the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> SBGJ201 and SBGH339, just to confirm that they are compatible. They indeed are. Will I keep it that way? Not really. I spent a while choosing the leather straps in Studio Shizukuichi and I stand by the same opinion I have had since then: brown leather fits the dark green dial better than a shiny grey bracelet . <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>

PPN<p>More pics from the tour of <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a>’s Studio Shizukuichi. We were not allowed to film the watchmakers but we did see them at work through a series of windows allowing to peek into their routine and their desks. I must say they seemed like very precise people and have very very good tools. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>I visited <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a>’s Studio Shizukuichi and had a great time 😁. Building designed by Kengo Kuma is beautiful, tour is interesting for both beginners and nerds, and staff are extremely helpful. They split between groups of Japanese people and English-speaking people. The latter is usually less crowded, so if you come from overseas, it is likely you get a tour guide almost to yourself. We were 3 today. Everyone gets a small gift too at the end. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>After much deliberation, the SBGE285 aka Mistflake is not going to come with me on my trip to <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Japan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Japan</span></a>. It makes more sense to bring only one watch and it makes even more sense that this watch should be the SBGJ201 aka Mt Iwate instead:<br>- I am visiting <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a>’s Studio Shizukuichi near Mt Iwate where it was literally made<br>- I want to travel lightly this time and it is a GMT too that does all what I need<br>- There is a very high likelihood I get more <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> over there<br><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>The day after I said that the Mistflake was “already set to be my companion this time”, I managed to book a tour of the <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a>’s Studio Shizukuishi. I am now strongly considering bringing the SBGJ201 aka Mt Iwate back to its birthplace. Should I take both? 😂 <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>I am still in the middle of planning my trip to <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Japan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Japan</span></a> next week but all I am thinking about is the food instead of the sightseeing 😂. The trusty <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> Mistflake is already set to be my companion this time but I am wondering if I should bring another watch too. Not sure if I should as I might do some <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a> shopping over there anyway. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
PPN<p>When I was in Paris a few months ago, I had the opportunity to try a few <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/GrandSeiko" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrandSeiko</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watches</span></a>. I already talked about the SBGW321 aka Nishikigoi (<a href="https://mastodon.online/@ppn/113861586363156313" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mastodon.online/@ppn/113861586</span><span class="invisible">363156313</span></a>). But there were actually a few others too that I didn’t talk about: the SLGA025 aka Atera Valley, the SBGA413 aka Shunbun, the SLGH021 aka Genbi Valley and the SBGH357 aka Autumn Twilight. I also like those but they don’t really fit my current collection. Maybe someday but not now. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/watchesofmastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>watchesofmastodon</span></a></p>
