A Tradition of Violence
The History of Deputy Gangs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
https://knock-la.com/tradition-of-violence-lasd-gang-history/
Six years ago, a plumber found the decomposing body of Raymundo Rivera inside a pillar at a Winco supermarket in Lancaster. At the time, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said the 35-year-old appeared to have fled during a traffic stop and may have “gotten inside there and gotten down to try and hide from the deputies and then couldn’t get out.”
But according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in L.A. Superior Court, former Deputy Aaron Tanner later boasted that he and other deputies had chased Rivera — and that they knew he’d fallen into the pillar. Instead of trying to save him, the suit says, “the deputies left him there to die, and made false reports that they lost track of the suspect in the pursuit.”
...
In addition to raising a litany of other claims about Tanner — including an on-duty incident in which he allegedly cut off a dead horse’s leg — the suit also describes repeated misconduct involving other members of the [LASD gang called the] Rattlesnakes.

Today LASD posted the 18th in-custody death for this year, a 32-year-old who died in his cell in the 2800 floor of Men's Central Jail -- the facility that was at one point scheduled for closure earlier this year.
Last year during an inspection at East LA sheriff's station, an OIG official saw something shocking: a defaced poster of her boss next to a gun, w/words that seemed like a threat
Six mths later, IG Max Huntsman detailed what happened afterward.

The names of the 35 deputies have not been released to the public, but Inspector General Max Huntsman said they were a subset of the 41 deputies identified as suspected gang members last year.

NEW: Inspector General Max Huntsman sent letters to 35 deputies Friday, directing them to come in and identify members of the Banditos and Executioners deputy gangs. Deputies must answer, unless they fear self incrimination, Huntsman said.

LA jails are now up to FIFTEEN in-custody deaths this year.
The most recent was a 19-year-old, who died at Men's Central Jail - the notorious, dungeon-like facility that was supposed to be closed earlier this year.
A few days ago, I reported that LASD had begun investigating a memo accusing the East LA captain of racial bias + retaliation
Now, officials confirm she's being moved to court services. It's not a demotion - but a lateral transfer to a less-desired post. #lasd #losangles #googlelasdgangs
The sprawling $80 million lawsuit over alleged abuse by deputy gangs at the East LA sheriffs station will move forward after surviving a pair of summary judgment hearings this week and last:
NEW: Last week, I got a leaked memo claiming an LASD captain allegedly schemed to avoid promoting an “angry black guy" who had testified about deputy gangs.
Here's my story, and part of the memo that sparked an investigation. #lasd #googlelasdgangs #losangeles https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-04-30/sheriffs-department-investigates-memo-alleging-captain-wouldnt-promote-angry-black-sergeant
LA jails just posted their 11th death this year -- another at Men's Central Jail, marking the fourth this year in that particular facility.
This is the same facility the county previously said they'd close by 2023.
I interviewed the Los Angeles sheriff last week and the interview finally published today. Unfortunately, I had to leave out the best part so I have come here to share it with y'all: https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-03-24/sheriff-robert-luna-im-going-to-be-recognized-as-a-sheriff-who-follows-the-law #sheriff #lasd #googlelasdgangs #latimes

Another piece of journalism describing the gang problem with the LASD
if you like podcasts and are interested in police issues at all I highly suggest checking out A Tradition of Violence, it’s a deep dive on LASD gangs, they’re still releasing episodes. While it’s difficult subject matter they do a great job of organizing it all and laying out the facts.
First post. Fuck the pigs.
