"To those who have preceded me in the study of the posthistoric world, and.. permitted me to examine artifacts surviving so many centuries of futurity, and most especially to those who have allowed me to visit and photograph the era’s few extant buildings, I am truly grateful." #GeneWolfe

In 1971 Gene Wolfe didn't win the Nebula Award because the committee decided that no nominee was deemed worthwhile. Maybe it was a last minute decision, as Isaac Asimov announced Wolfe's "The Island of Doctor Death" the winner.

To try again, he went on to write "The Death of Doctor Island", literally about an island being a doctor. The fact Wolfe turned this ridiculous premise into a brilliantly complex story of sci-fi horror makes me love him even more.

Dedicated rereaders will often skip Dr. Talos's play in /Claw of the Conciliator/. Well, some people actually recorded it as an audio-only play. They did a good job. It's more entertaining than in the book. Feels less confusing.

I just finished *Seven American Nights* by Gene Wolfe and I'm mystified. What happened, really? There are so many questions from this story.

I tried to do a search for it, and found some theories. I can't say I'm really convinced by them. There're things I still find unsolved.

I read Peace, by Gene Wolfe, back in 2021, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since: cryptic and nightmarish; unreliably told through layers of secondhand story and myth; brimming with unusual imagery, obfuscatory language, and clues buried beneath the surface.

Peace is, seemingly, a memoir of a man called Alden Dennis Weer, who travels through his memories as if down literal halls in his home—but the picture he paints of his life is veiled and we have to wonder what Alden is trying to hide from us.

Sometimes, I had no idea what I was reading. It's a book that forces you to pay close attention—and even reread it—before you can begin to understand. But it was the power of Wolfe's storytelling, the slow creep of horror, and the excitement of a puzzle that needs to be solved that pulled me in and kept me hooked. I can’t wait to read it again.

If I remember right, in the Anomalous Subsurface Environment setting, cleric spells are granted specifically by the "orbital gods", though I can't remember for sure it it is clearly defined that they are AI satellites or something else.

Also c.f. Litany of the Long Sun, where most (though definitely not all) the gods are the uploaded personalities of folks who built the generation ship it is based in.

It's stupid of me, but I started the SOLDIER trilogy and I forgot how much Gene Wolfe slaps, yo. Ladro is basically Severian on steroids. He can't remember a damn thing from the day before and relies on the scroll that we're reading to live. MEMENTO in ancient Greece, you might say. But then you've got Wolfe writing about all this with his careful refined hand. This totally makes up for the bad novel run I had.

Been very tired and unmotivated these last 2 weeks. Not sure why. Just the usual pressure at work.

Trying to read Gene Wolfe's The Wizard Knight, but can't make much progress. It has his usual shtick of using extremely unreliable narrator, but the beginning left me completely cold. His earlier novels made me feel more engaged, and trying to tease out the missing puzzle pieces about the world. On Green's Jungles was kind of the same.

Media Death Cult dropped the new video on The Book of the New Sun today. With over two hours in length and given the new focus on less content and a significantly higher production value, I'm very excited about this.

Apparently it features the guys from Alzabo Soup too, which is a great bonus.
