Pretty sure Woody’s recordings are mostly over on Smithsonian/Folkways,(for now)
Some at the Library of Congress issued by Electra/Rounder in the 90s and are streaming but the extensive notes are missing
#Folkways keeps the old Arhoolie Records albums available — including tons of #zydeco #conjunto & #cajun #accordion because unlike the rest of the US folk revival, Austrian-born Chris Strachwitz was not afraid of the squeezebox
MICHAEL HURLEY, 1941-2025
Mastodon Post
So sorry to learn of the death of Michael Hurley. The attachment is a screenshot from a Smithsonian Folkways mailing that arrived this afternoon. My old singing partner was a solid Michael Hurley fan.

Founds some cool folkways tapes at the thrift. I've never seen tapes like this, they have printed out covers on the inside, like not professionally, just black and white on printer paper. Really good stuff too!

LEAD BELLY ON WNYC
WNYC rounded up fascinating archival recordings from Lead Belly’s appearances on the station, spanning from 1940 to 1948.

It is not really often that we have hot Lead Belly news.

Let us wave a flag for the Late Great #HarveyMilk.. Thus album is fantastic, music for the youth but not necessarily only for younger ears. #MrGregandCassMcCombs on #Folkways..

Oh man, Smithsonian’s Folkways label and American History Museum are releasing Robert ‘Mack’ McCormick’s tapes, research and writings as part of Folkways’ 75th anniversary! The Monster unleashed!

So yesterday I shared the news about the Friends of #Folkways effort -- $5 a month, you can stream everything in their catalog and affiliated labels, https://folkways.si.edu/friends-of-folkways for more -- and today I'm currently tripping out on this amazingly earnest 1958 release about the sounds of the early satellites. This cover art is pure @quartzcity among others. #music https://folkways.si.edu/voices-of-the-satellites/sounds/album/smithsonianth
Some actually happy news after all this week -- #Smithsonian #Folkways has announced a new #FriendsofFolkways program. $5 a month gets you access to their entire streaming catalog plus sublabels, at least for US listeners. More here at the link! #music https://folkways.si.edu/friends-of-folkways

That’s wonderful!
They’ve had their liner notes available as PDF downloads for years
But this is a new development that’s quite exciting
It's the second #MusicWomenWednesday and I've been looking forward to this since last week!
Gonna go back a little ways in time this week to some of the greats that helped shaped American music
Let's start this off right, with Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Didn't it Rain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9a49oFalZE
Mattie May Thomas: No Mo Freedom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZsBm2KYD8o
And last, Ola Belle Reed: High on a Mountain
Starting digging through old #Folkways recordings. That only means one thing. Spending money. Once I have it. I used to have quite a few Folkways recordings back when. I don't remember everything I had, but if I see them again, I will remember. I have already added #RoscoeHolcomb and #DockBoggs to my To Buy list. One thing I do know, #Smithsonian expanded the Folkways recordings to be available and make purchases hard to turn down. That is, if I recall correctly.
Hey! Come to the Hirshorn Museum (Independence Ave SW & 7th St SW in DC) on September 9th for a FREE 3-hour concert in octophonic sound. #Matmos will be manipulating and transforming the back catalog of field recordings, nature, and scientific LPs from #Folkways in 8 channels of surround sound! Expect frogs,
wasps, stomach growls, and more! https://hirshhorn.si.edu/event/matmos-plays-the-sounds-of-folkways-records/
#NowPlaying #Folkways ❝In the 1950s and 60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. Robert “Mack” McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. This is the first compilation of music drawn from his fabled collection.❞ https://smithsonianfolkways.bandcamp.com/album/playing-for-the-man-at-the-door-field-recordings-from-the-collection-of-mack-mccormick-1958-1971
