Pretty sure Woody’s recordings are mostly over on Smithsonian/Folkways,(for now)

Some at the Library of Congress issued by Electra/Rounder in the 90s and are streaming but the extensive notes are missing 😤

#Folkways keeps the old Arhoolie Records albums available — including tons of #zydeco #conjunto & #cajun #accordion because unlike the rest of the US folk revival, Austrian-born Chris Strachwitz was not afraid of the squeezebox

Oh man, Smithsonian’s Folkways label and American History Museum are releasing Robert ‘Mack’ McCormick’s tapes, research and writings as part of Folkways’ 75th anniversary! The Monster unleashed!

So yesterday I shared the news about the Friends of #Folkways effort -- $5 a month, you can stream everything in their catalog and affiliated labels, folkways.si.edu/friends-of-fol for more -- and today I'm currently tripping out on this amazingly earnest 1958 release about the sounds of the early satellites. This cover art is pure @quartzcity among others. #music folkways.si.edu/voices-of-the-

It's the second #MusicWomenWednesday and I've been looking forward to this since last week!

Gonna go back a little ways in time this week to some of the greats that helped shaped American music

Let's start this off right, with Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Didn't it Rain

Mattie May Thomas: No Mo Freedom

And last, Ola Belle Reed: High on a Mountain

Starting digging through old #Folkways recordings. That only means one thing. Spending money. Once I have it. I used to have quite a few Folkways recordings back when. I don't remember everything I had, but if I see them again, I will remember. I have already added #RoscoeHolcomb and #DockBoggs to my To Buy list. One thing I do know, #Smithsonian expanded the Folkways recordings to be available and make purchases hard to turn down. That is, if I recall correctly.

#NowPlaying #Folkways ❝In the 1950s and 60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. Robert “Mack” McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. This is the first compilation of music drawn from his fabled collection.❞ smithsonianfolkways.bandcamp.c
