🌏 Chestnut munia (Lonchura atricapilla)

The chestnut munia, also known as the black-headed munia, is a small finch with a stubby grey-blue bill and a black head. Its body is primarily brown, with a brick-red patch on the lower back visible in flight. Some subspecies also have a black belly. Sexes are similar, while juveniles are uniformly pale brown without the dark head. This gregarious bird is found throughout Southeast Asia, frequenting open grasslands and cultivated areas, especially rice paddies. They feed mainly on grains and seeds and build large, dome-shaped nests in bushes or tall grass, laying 4-7 white eggs. At least ten subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

This is the last photo of the baby House #Finches. They made a lot of noise, and killed my fern with their poop, but I miss them now that they're gone.

Photo 1 was Thurs (24-apr). Photo 2 was Sat (26-apr). I don't know their age, but they hatched at least 14 days before they left.

🌍 Bronze mannikin (Spermestes cucullata)

The bronze mannikin, also known as the bronze munia, is a small, compact finch, with a blackish head, grey bill, and brown upperparts. Its white underparts have brown barring on the flanks. A key feature is the darker, iridescent patch on the upper wing feathers. This gregarious bird is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa in grassy areas, open woodlands, and gardens. Bronze mannikins are often seen in flocks, foraging mainly on seeds and occasionally insects. They build ball-shaped nests, sometimes near wasp nests, and both parents care for the young. Two subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

The double-barred finch, also known as the owl finch, is a striking estrildid finch found in Australia. It's known for its distinctive appearance: a white face bordered by black, and white underparts with two black bars across the chest. They inhabit dry savannah, grasslands, and shrublands, often near water. Double-barred finches are gregarious, feeding on seeds and moving in flocks. Their behavior includes ground feeding and a characteristic undulating flight. Two subspecies are recognised.

I have always had trouble telling male from female goldfinches in the winter--if you can glimpse the underside of their wings, the females are light and the males are dark.

There are many house finches and almost as many American goldfinches, but this fellow is rare. I think this is only the second time in 10 years that I have found a male purple finch at the feeders. He looks similar to the male house finch, but his coloring is more pink, while the house finch's is more orange.
