What the media won't say:
Stephanie Turner refuses to compete with a transgender woman... but had no issue competing with cis-men!

"The trans woman who she refused to fence only finished in 24th place. Stephanie Yurner, the forfeiter, also beat *multiple* cis men in a regional match just one week earlier.
And conservatives just paid her $5k for her kneel."

Bluesky Social · Eli Erlick (@elierlick.bsky.social)This story gets so much worse. The trans woman who she refused to fence only finished in 24th place. Stephanie, the forfeiter, also beat *multiple* cis men in a regional match just one week earlier! And conservatives just paid her $5k for her kneel. Why is nobody talking about this? Musk's crack about Navarro's Harvard Ph.D. reminds me of this old joke:

Q: How do you know if somebody's gone to Harvard?
A: They'll tell you in the first five minutes.

Which is a phenomenon that I have literally experienced myself.

This is also a good occasion to tell this Harvard story.

My high school, in eastern Massachusetts, had a #fencing team. Generally the team was mostly or all girls. That was a rare high school sport, so they competed against college teams.

@Sunshine #WagnerCollege is a private college affiliated with the fairly progressive Evangelical #Lutheran Church in America. As a college of the Church it should concerned with inclusion and welcoming, not pushing away the vulnerable. How disappointing that the Lutheran community fails at the basic foundations of being Christ-like. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I am not an active member today in large part due the Church's failures in inclusion.

#ELCA #trans #fencing

Hopped on FB today to check in on all of the #fencing groups of which I'm still a part. I knew that there would be some comments about the recent "controversy" stirred up by a transphobic fencer looking for her 15 minutes of fame, but I was not expecting the absolute vitriol that was being posted in these groups. To be clear, there is also a lot of support for trans folx among members of the community, but it is a hard thing for me to want to continue to be involved at all with some these people.

If USA Fencing bows to pressure and reverses its position on trans athlete inclusion I will have to take a hard look at whether or they deserve the privilege of my continued hard work and participation in running their events. After nearly 30 years involved in the sport, maybe it's time to find a new hobby.

New #openaccess release!

'Fences and Biosecurity: The Politics of Governing Unruly Nature', edited by Annika Pohl Harrisson & Michael Eilenberg, explores the role of fencing as a mechanism of control, exclusion, and power in the name of #biosecurity. The volume brings together scholars from different regions to investigate the ways in which biosecurity #fencing is deployed across different contexts in #Europe and #NorthAmerica.
