"The #EmmettTill Memory Project (ETMP), an app, is one of them. It uses digitized archival documents, photos of those involved and of sites central to that fateful August day, and more so that users may #educate themselves about who Emmett Till was and why his death still resonates. The ETMP’s digital assets are vital to ensuring the ongoing preservation of Till’s memory as well as his legacy."

☕ : A Black story

When I arrived at an empty house after school that day, I reached to straighten the magazines on one of the bookshelves in our family room. I was 7. In the pile was an old Jet magazine. The cover was of a boy who bad men had killed. His picture was there. He was on a box bed. I read the story and in it, I discovered that children die and horror was a part of Black life. It had happened just 2 years before that moment.

On 28 August 1955, while visiting family in Mississippi, 14-year-old Emmett Till was lynched. Till was then vilified by the mainstream press. Headlines from newspapers such as the Washington Post referred to him as the “Wolf-Whistler.” Mamie Elizabeth Till-Mobley’s courageous decision to have an open casket funeral, and share photos of her son’s mutilated body with the world, helped inspire the modern Civil Rights Movement.

Today is #WorldBookDay in the #UK & #Ireland (the rest of the world celebrates it on April 23). I celebrate books everyday but in honor of today's World Book Day, I'll honor #PercivalEverett's #TheTrees, a haunting & believe it or not at times comic (in the way #Everett often is) retelling of #EmmettTill's murder. I know #Erasure is on everyone's mind (as it should be) what w/#AmericanFiction, but do read #TheTrees, if & when you can. What's your book for today?
