Mark Sanders<p>Meet Mobilizing. "In a visual culture, graphic design is an influential social medium. Throughout history, and especially in times of conflict, graphic designers have created posters, newspapers, and other graphics to recruit, boost morale, protest ideologies, or mobilize support...Using symbols, narrative images, bold typography, and other techniques, designers have changed the minds of audiences with all types of persuasive media."</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/mhogd7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mhogd7ed</span></a></p>
Mark Sanders<p>We would like to introduce you to the 7th ed. of Meggs' History of Graphic Design.</p><p>Meet Exalting. We have restructured the book with chapters demonstrating motivations (themes) of why we create graphic design. Many people and movements now occupy multiple chapters reflecting their complexity. We invite readers to question the ways these works have been categorized and consider what alternative themes they might represent.</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/mhogd7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mhogd7ed</span></a></p>
WebHeads United<p>I always enjoy a good design thought experiment. This post from WebHeads United is particularly unique: What if architect Charles Dickey's iconic Hawaiian style inspired a website?</p><p>It's a fascinating look at how regional architectural vernacular—like his distinctive rooflines—could influence modern UI and digital layouts.</p><p>A fun read for design and history fans.</p><p>See the concept: <a href="https://webheadsunited.com/charles-dickey-designed-or-inspired-a-website/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">webheadsunited.com/charles-dic</span><span class="invisible">key-designed-or-inspired-a-website/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/WebDesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebDesign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UIDesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UIDesign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DesignHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DesignHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CharlesDickey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CharlesDickey</span></a></p>

Mark Sanders<p>We are thrilled to share the final Table of Contents for the soon-to-be-released 7th ed. of Meggs' History of Graphic Design. Page design is nearly complete for all 500 pages and are doing prepress with final files being sent to print in the next couple weeks.</p><p>There is so much to share about the new edition, but we'll wait for proper introductions until after we ship all the final files.</p><p>Stay tuned!</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/mhogd7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mhogd7ed</span></a></p>
Mark Sanders<p>Wanna feel worse about your writing? Hire a copy editor. Don’t get me wrong they are amazing! But, every grammatical and formatting error is laid bare. To make matters worse, correct the errors on typeset pages. Itamar Medeiros<p>Susan Kare's icons made computers more human. From the Happy Mac to Windows Solitaire, she shows us how powerful intuitive design can be. Her work reminds us that constraints force us to clarify our intentions, to say more with less, and to design with purpose. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Creativity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Creativity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DesignHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DesignHistory</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.designative.info/2025/05/31/susan-kare-craft-humanizing-interfaces/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">designative.info/2025/05/31/su</span><span class="invisible">san-kare-craft-humanizing-interfaces/</span></a></p>

Mark Sanders<p>A new chapter we are excited about is a timeline documenting important graphic design and cultural events from pre-history to present. The Timeline takes a unique form that we hope is understandable. Traditionally timelines chart time linearly from top-to-bottom or from left-to-right. To simplify and condense our timeline, move through time from top-to-bottom, but over 2-column per page. What do you think?</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/mhogd7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mhogd7ed</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designprocess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>designprocess</span></a></p>

Mark Sanders<p>I'm 200 or so pages into layout and finding my rhythm. I can now layout a spread in 2-3 hours. Granted this is only initial layout and all pages are printed and tuned typographically before final review.
