"We can and will debate in the years to come whether this is because we allowed local journalism to wither and die on the vine, or whether it’s because we allowed capitalism to swallow journalism, just as it swallowed state courts and local governments. We can someday debate whether we so fully blurred the lines between fact and opinion that we allowed voters to believe that their own opinions mattered more than agreed-upon facts. And we can discuss whether journalism finally shrugged its shoulders and gave up and became a reality show before or after the courts did. "

The #SupremeCourt’s #Republican appointees are sympathetic to wealthy individuals and corporations, so they will contort the law to help them,” write #DahliaLithwick and #MarkJosephStern.
“The court has placed itself at the apex of the state, agreeing to share power only with a #strongman president who seeks to govern in line with the #conservative justices’ vision.”
The brilliant #TimothySnyder had this to say about the #SCOTUS immunity ruling. "Unless #Trump loses, #America ends."
Hey #CNN: how about replace #ScottJennings, who as far as I can tell adds zero to the conversation, with a #historian of #fascism? Or as #DahliaLithwick said: "As an official representative of the legal commentariat I want to suggest that tonight’s a good news cycle to talk to the #fascism and #authoritarianism experts. This is their inning now…
I wanted to know what the brilliant #TimothySnyder had to say about the #SCOTUS immunity ruling. Here it is: "Unless #Trump loses, #America ends."

Or as #DahliaLithwick said: "As an official representative of the legal commentariat I want to suggest that tonight’s a good news cycle to talk to the #fascism and #authoritarianism experts. "But conviction notwithstanding, there is reason to be alarmed—deeply alarmed. This one felony conviction was hardly a vindication of the American justice system. The system “held” only insofar . . . as efforts to bully and terrorize and bribe witnesses who have helped Donald Trump commit crimes with impunity for decades didn’t quite manage to silence all of those witnesses."

#DahliaLithwick's latest article demanding we all stop criticizing #Biden because #Trump is worse was super #cringetastic. Really unworthy of a platform as large as #Slate.
I expect people writing for major news outlets to not engage in #TuQuoque #fallacy.
The fact that Trump is worse in some respects does not grant Biden immunity from criticism of his age, his evident doddering, his unquestioning support of #Zionist #apartheid and #genocide, or his record as a police state #authoritarian.
From the NYT, Frank Bruni's For Love of Sentences:
'The ethical shortcomings of Supreme Court justices generated some deliciously pointed commentary. In Slate, for example, #DahliaLithwick parsed the generosity of billionaires that Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas have so richly enjoyed.
“A #protip that will no doubt make those justices who have been lured away to elaborate bear hunts and deer hunts and rabbit hunts and salmon hunts by wealthy oligarchs feel a bit sad: If your close personal friends who only just met you after you came onto the courts are memorializing your time together for posterity, there’s a decent chance you are, in fact, the thing being hunted,” she wrote.'
Sharp taste of reality from @Dahlialith .

Deep & Heavy episode of #Amicus #podcast #DahliaLithwick @Dahlialith
“In the first of Amicus’ summer series of conversations about books and podcasts that have helped us look at the Supreme Court from a different angle, Dahlia Lithwick is joined by #JoelAnderson, host of Season 8 of Slate’s #SlowBurn podcast: #BecomingJusticeThomas. They talk about the experiences and people who helped shape Justice Thomas’ worldview and how deeply his jurisprudence is rooted in a kind of “cruel to be kind” ethos from his childhood. And why he was so blind to the challenges and suffering of so many Black women in his life.
Next, Dahlia talks to #HeatherMcGhee, Author #TheSumofUs: WHAT RACISM COSTS EVERYONE AND HOW WE CAN PROSPER TOGETHER, about her books and podcast, and what they can teach us about a Supreme Court that is inclined to frame the world as zero-sum.”
