The grants sent millions of dollars to organizations that support #intervention programs for #nonviolent youth offenders; programs to avert #opioid-related deaths in #Newark; programs aimed at identifying community-based approaches to preventing #HateCrimes against #Arab, #Jewish & #Asian Americans; & a confidential hotline run by the National Center for #Victims of #Crime to inform crime victims about their rights.

The #DOJ on Tues canceled hundreds of grants to community orgs & local govts, including funding for #GunViolence prevention programs, #crime-#victim #advocacy & efforts to combat #opioid #addiction, acc/to an email obtained by WaPo.

Maureen Henneberg, acting head of the Office of #Justice Programs, which oversees the DOJ grant program, told staff in the email that the canceled awards were identified through a weeks-long review process & did not align w/the #Trump admin’s priorities.

If you haven't seen it, make your next Yates treat "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" (1973). Rotten Tomatoes rating: 98%.

Robert Mitchum kills it as a small-time Boston Irish gangster (including a creditable stab at the accent).

Based on great novel by crime dialog master George V. Higgins, who actually had been an Assistant U.S. Attorney (a prosecutor) pursuing men like Eddie.

As Wikipedia notes: "The title is purely ironic: Eddie has no friends."

A quotation from Hannah Arendt

There is all the difference in the world between the criminal’s avoiding the public eye and the civil disobedient’s taking the law into his own hands in open defiance. This distinction between an open violation of the law, performed in public, and a clandestine one is so glaringly obvious that it can be neglected only by prejudice or ill will.
