Colin P. Clarke, a #counterterrorism analyst at the Soufan Group, a security consulting firm based in NY, said in an email, “Publicizing the raid makes sense, as the #US may be eager to highlight the anti-#ISIS fight, in partnership with #Turkey & #Syria, particularly the latter, in an effort to show the lengths Damascus is going to in order to make tangible changes & accede to US demands.”

#CentCom provided few details on the ground operation, but #military #counterterrorism raids…have typically involved helicopter-borne Special Ops commandos, often supported by attack planes & drones.

Ground ops are riskier…because they put troops in harm’s way. They often mean the target is particularly important & likely near civilians…. And the location of the raid may contain sensitive info—like computer hard drives, cellphones & other data—that could help counterterrorism.…

ScienceOpenExploring the root causes of the rise of the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically Nigeria: A regional security constellation perspective
Insurgency has infiltrated contemporary Nigerian culture, whether it involves abduction by the Niger Delta militants in the south, banditry and cattle rustling in the northwest, north central or southwest regions, or bombings by the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) in the northeast and north central regions. The Nigerian populace and its neighbors at the Lake Chad periphery continue to suffer significantly from these acts of terrorism. The point made in this paper is that the insecurity burdening contemporary Nigeria, as a result of ISWAP’s activities, mainly in the northeast, is due to the long-term failure of the Nigerian state to address the domestic issues – such as resource distribution, ethnic tensions, corruption, and economic inequalities, to name a few – that underpin some of these security threats. The Nigerian state has also been unable to demonstrate characteristics or achieve goals that are considered natural or advantageous to the entire population. The paper examines the conditions leading to the rise of the jihadist group ISWAP by using the concepts of regional security constellation theory as advanced by Buzan & Weaver (2003).

“Self-defence means not only attacking terrorists but destroying them. When Hamas terrorists hide behind people, behind schools … civilian places lose their protected status because terrorists abuse it,” said Germany's then foreign minister during a parliamentary session marking the anniversary of the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel.

“The Intern in Charge”: Meet the 22-Year-Old Trump’s Team Picked to Lead Terrorism Prevention
One year out of college and with no apparent national security expertise, Thomas Fugate is the Department of Homeland Security official tasked with overseeing the government’s main hub for combating violent extremism.

In the past seven weeks, at least five high-profile targeted attacks have unfolded across the U.S., including a car bombing in California and the gunning down of two Israeli Embassy aides in Washington. Against this backdrop, current and former national security officials say, the Trump administration’s decision to shift counterterrorism resources to immigration and leave the violence-prevention portfolio to inexperienced appointees is “reckless.”

“We’re entering very dangerous territory,” one longtime U.S. counterterrorism official said.

For the first time, French terror prosecutors investigate a murder inspired by far-right ideology.

A man shot dead a Tunisian man and wounded a Turkish man in southern France on Saturday.

The 53-year-old suspect had posted numerous racist and threatening comments on social media before carrying out the attack.

The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) has taken over the investigation.

Yesterday, I spent a little time on this account writing about the Trump regime, Project Esther, and the fascist American right's plan to use anti-terrorism laws to crush their political opposition. Unfortunately, I ran out of room to say everything I wanted to say so last night I expanded my thoughts over on NIDC and did the sourcing legwork.

Nina-Bytes: Trump’s COINTELPRO Looms Into Focus

"This then brings us to the ominous reality so very few observers in the media seem to be grasping, namely that targeting the anti-genocide, pro-Palestine movement is merely the tip of the fascist spear in the Trump regime’s war on dissent and political opposition. The rhetoric, suppression techniques, and legal arguments that are being deployed against foreign anti-genocide student protestors as we speak are easy to replicate while targeting more or less the entire oppositional left in America, including milquetoast NGOs, aid groups, and likely even “liberal” political organizations like the Democratic Party. The broad and extremely vague nature of our terrorism laws leaves room for the Trump regime to label almost anyone a member of a terrorist organization, and define material support for that organization in any way they please. The authors of Project Esther are very clear that they consider opposition to capitalism, or the American state as embodied by the Trump administration, to be valid targets for those designations. If anti-genocide protest is “materially supporting Hamas,” then funding migrant support work is probably “materially supporting narco-terrorist gangs,” and speaking out against the US government can be “materially supporting” any group of “bad guys” around the globe that do the same. The possibilities for targeted, legalized repression are quite literally endless."
