Tim H<p>A couple of pics of the Canna Lilly I've been looking after for my neighbour. Unfortunately, I knocked off a couple of flowers lifting it onto the bench (The washing line deceived me! 😊) It's also grown at an angle, because her tiny backyard doesn't get quite enough sun, I think <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/ContainerGardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ContainerGardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Kent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kent</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/England" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>England</span></a></p>
Gigi 🍄‍🟫<p>Do you pick your tomatoes at "break point" or do you letting them ripen fully on the vine?</p><p>🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅</p><p>Apparently, studies show that taking tomatoes off the vine to ripen<br>1. lets the plant focus on growing other tomatoes, and, <br>2. as long as you leave the stem on, doesn't change the quality, and <br>3. may even IMPROVE the taste.</p><p>🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅</p><p>I always wondered if I was imagining that last one, but it always makes the flavour less watery, even when they get a big influx of rain and get saturated.</p><p>The ones in the last photo don't really turn a different shade, btw.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GardeningWithAnarchists" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GardeningWithAnarchists</span></a> <br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ContainerGardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ContainerGardening</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GigiGarden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GigiGarden</span></a></p>
Gigi 🍄‍🟫<p>Huh.</p><p>I have just spent the last half hour discovering that very many of the tomato varieties I have purchased over the years are not actually the variety they're supposed to be.</p><p>It happens a lot when I get seedlings at garden centres:<br>The tomatoes turn out very different from what the marker says or shows.</p><p>One of my current favourites is a small mango-coloured plum tomato that I have no idea what it actually is because somebody clearly swapped markers at the garden centre.</p><p>And then there are things like these strange finger-like cherry tomatoes that clearly got cross-pollinated with something last year before I saved the seeds.<br>They're definitely not the same tomatoes I grew last year.</p><p>I'm waiting for the first one to fully ripen to decide if I chuck the rest of those seeds or not.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ContainerGardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ContainerGardening</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GigiGarden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GigiGarden</span></a></p>

DoomsdaysCW<p>So, I was just outside picking and squishing (I don't mind doing that). I've tried the pepper-garlic spray method, but sometimes forget to re-apply after it rains.
