Nicolas Ward<p><strong>World Cube Association Championship</strong></p><p>Kid has gotten really into <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedcubing" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">speedcubing</a> in the last year. A few months ago we watched the Netflix documentary <a href="https://www.netflix.com/us/title/81092143?s=i&amp;trkid=258593161&amp;vlang=en&amp;trg=cp" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Speed Cubers</a>, which focused largely on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Park" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Max Park</a> breaking a bunch of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feliks_Zemdegs" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Feliks Zemdegs</a>‘ records. On a whim I looked up when and where the next championship would be… only to find <a href="https://www.cubingusa.org/worlds/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">it was this summer in our fair city</a>!! We grabbed the very reasonably priced tickets. If we had known far enough ahead to do a qualifier, kid technically could have made it into the first round for his sub-40 3x3x3 solves which still seem incredibly fast at home.</p><p>We attended a couple of different rounds this past weekend, and streamed some others. It is absolutely wild how fast some of these (mostly kid) cubers are. It’s kind of like the Olympics, where the slowest sprinter behind the pack is still faster than 99.99999% of humanity; the same here where the crowd would give a disappointed “awww” when someone got above 7 seconds on a 3x3x3. Another interesting thing I noticed: like the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Olympic_Committee" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">IOC</a>, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Cube_Association" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">WCA</a> has competitors from Taiwan participate as Chinese Taipei. (I assume because otherwise competitors from China wouldn’t compete.)</p><p>At one point after the 6x6x6 finals I happened to walk by Max Park, which is kinda like running into LeBron after a game or something. Didn’t get a chance (or have an object) to ask for an autograph. Feliks made some finals but didn’t place; it’s wild how he’s an “old man” of the sport and basically aged out at 29. (He is running a business to teach others <a href="https://www.cubeskills.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Cube Skills</a>.)</p><p>The audience was packed for various finals on Sunday; we were way in the back on some uncomfortable metal bleachers. I think most of the crowd was other competitors and their families, which makes sense since it’s a relatively niche interest. </p><p>One slight disappointment with attending was how many people moved around during the competition. Like they’re less than 10 seconds, just sit down and wait a moment! I was also hoping more people would be masked, being a nerdier event with lots of international travel, but that wasn’t the case.</p><p>Still, it was super fun to see, especially the <a href="https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/competitions/WC2025/results/all?event=333" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">intense 3x3x3 finals</a>. Maybe in 2027 we’ll go to <a href="https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/posts/wca-world-championship-2027-host-city-announcement-july-2025" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Uppsala</a>!
