#Covid causes what we in the biz call "#cardiovascular events," among its other nasty effects. #Heart attack, #stroke, pulmonary #embolism, deep vein #thrombosis. All things you should try to avoid.

nature.com/articles/s41467-024

The covid #vaccine—any of the currently approved vaccines—helps protect against such events. A #mechanism isn't yet clear: the obvious hypothesis is that it works by reducing the incidence and sincerity of covid, and therefore reduces the effects of the disease. Say it with me now: further research is needed. Send me a pile of cash and I'll be happy to get on that, BTW.

(It also helps protect against #cancer, by an entirely different mechanism. I can natter about that if anyone wants.)

But the effect itself is clear. Has been from the start of the #mRNA vaccine era, really. Now a very large-scale study has confirmed it. There will be more studies, as there should be. They will show the same result. I'd bet my fortune on that, if I had a fortune, because then I'd have an even bigger fortune. Have I mentioned lately that #scientists need to eat?

As it is, all I have to pledge is my life and my sacred honor. I take both of those pretty seriously.

Of course this runs directly counter to the #antivax narrative. Based on a transitory and maybe illusory increase in clotting risk from an early vaccine that's no longer on the market (Johnson & Johnson) they've built an entire mythology about "the #clot shot." Lately they've added "#turbo cancer," which is not a thing that exists, to the canon.

So when dedicated antivaxers see any of the large and ever-growing number of studies showing protective effects against more than the #infection itself, especially against the exact same problems they claim the vaccine causes, they react with mockery and/or rage. It's all they know how to do.

Years of bitter experience have taught me there's no point in trying to reason with them. I still hold out hope that at least some antivax sentiment isn't that dedicated, that a lot of people are scared of getting vaccinated out of the general unease brought on by ignorance.

Oh yeah: the Methods section in the linked article provides details on data collection and analysis. It looks good to me, and I have a whole lot of experience in study design. Note that no vaccine manufacturers provided #funding. For a full list of funding sources, see the Acknowledgements.

I don't suppose I have many if any antivaxers left in my audience. If I do, well, I guess there's a reason you're still here. And if you like me or trust me or respect me at all, please pay attention to my words.

For everyone else, if what I've written here is useful, please do with it what you can.

NatureCohort study of cardiovascular safety of different COVID-19 vaccination doses among 46 million adults in England - Nature CommunicationsCOVID-19 vaccines have been associated with rare cardiovascular and thrombotic complications. Here, the authors use population-based longitudinal electronic health record data from ~46 million adults in England to quantify these outcomes following different vaccine doses and schedules.

Fascinating, worrying... and telling:

'trans people, whether or not they take hormones, are at higher risk of heart attacks and strokes'

WHETHER OR NOT THEY TAKE HORMONES.

Why might that be?

'Some of this is likely to be due to stigma and social factors. Dr Connelly explains that stigma and stress is common for trans people, and that this can also affect their cardiovascular health.'

Stigma and stress. Indeed.

#Smoke exposure can also worsen other #medical conditions. Emergency depts see more #cardiovascular related visits after smoky days. And a growing body of research suggests smoke exposure is linked to long-term impacts such as a higher risk of developing dementia.

Overall, #AirQuality has improved in the #US over the past 20 yrs, says Tarik Benmarhnia, a #climate & #health scientist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the UC San Diego. But #WildfireSmoke is erasing many of those gains.

Cardiovascular risk associated with the use of cannabis and cannabinoids: a systematic review and meta-analysis
heart.bmj.com/content/early/20
Positive link between cannabis use and 'Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events
news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4

Heart · Cardiovascular risk associated with the use of cannabis and cannabinoids: a systematic review and meta-analysisBackground Awareness has recently risen about the potential associated risks to the cardiovascular health of cannabis users. The objective was to evaluate the possible association between major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and the use of cannabis or cannabinoids. Methods Original pharmacoepidemiological studies providing risk estimates on cannabis-related MACE (ie, cardiovascular death, non-fatal acute coronary syndrome (ACS) including myocardial infarction (MI) or non-fatal stroke) published from 1 January 2016 to 31 January 2023 were included in the systematic review exploring PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus (last search: 20 September 2023). Design, duration, baseline characteristics, exposure, inclusion criteria, sample size, effect size and confusing factors, including exposure to psychoactive substances, were extracted. Study quality was assessed using the ROBINS-E (risk of bias in non-randomised studies—of exposures) tool. In the meta-analysis, adjusted effect estimates and their 95% CIs were pooled using a DerSimonian and Laird random effect model with inverse variance weighting based on the type of outcome (PROSPERO: CRD42023401401). Results Overall, 24 articles were included from 3012 initial records, including 17 cross-sectional studies, 6 cohort studies and 1 case-control study. Exposure corresponded to the use of cannabis in all studies, with one focused on medical cannabis. The estimated risk ratio (RR) was 1.29 (95% CI 1.05 to 1.59) for ACS, 1.20 (1.13 to 1.26) for stroke and 2.10 (1.29 to 3.42) for cardiovascular death. As measured in two studies, no statistically significant association was found for the composite outcome combining ACS and stroke. The focused analysis restricted to cohort studies yielded comparable results to the primary model (RR=1.32, 1.01 to 1.73). Conclusions This systematic review and meta-analysis uses an original approach centred on real-world data. The findings reveal positive associations between cannabis use and MACE. These findings should encourage investigating cannabis use in all patients presenting with serious cardiovascular disorders. PROSPERO registration number CRD42023401401. No data are available. The data explored in this systematic review and meta-analysis have been extracted from publicly available databases. Although the authors will not share the data directly, any interested researcher may apply the search strategy developed for this analysis, available in the online supplemental appendix.

The #wholegrain revolution! How #Denmark changed the diet – and health – of their entire nation

What’s so good about wholegrains? “Eating wholegrains helps to reduce your risk of:

- #Cardiovascular diseases
- #Cancer
- Type 2 #diabetes
- #Hypertension

They help lower your #cholesterol, stabilise your blood #glucose levels and improve the health of your #gut #microbiota,” says Natasha Selberg of the Danish Heart Association.
