#recaptcha #captchas are the worst form of #securitytheatre out there.

Not only are they slave labour, "free" training for #google but they are harvesting your data.

You get blackmailed to complete a craptcha, it steals your data, pretends to be "for security" and you can't access the site without it. It's EXTORTION.

google is the biggest #enshittification of modern life that exists and it needs to be destroyed.

If politicians knew what it was it would be illegal.

I just failed at an image #captcha (not enough coffee in my 🧠 ): 'If you want to see this website prove that you are human.' I am so fed up with the obligation to train such crap! My time is MY money.

In times of the #InternetOfThings, these #captchas are #anthropocentric and colonialist. A hubris against other living creatures. 🤓

#CAPTCHAs "work" because real humans are slower and more error-prone than #bots!

  • Bots will likely click those two boxes within less than a second.

Also it's intentional to add such wrong ones in as bots will confidently reply within milliseconds instead of seconds!

Today, I have to decide if I want to send some #Poetry
to a specific outlet.

When I tried a few days ago, It required a blind author blocker - captcha.

Which means, as a blind author, I have to find a random person walking down the street to come in and lay the captcha game so I can submit the poetry.

Not sure how #Publishers think blind authors can successfully, independently, submit writing through #Blind Blocking #Captchas.

Three "strategies" by which #websites with a just cause are shooting themselves in the foot:

  1. #Captchas – decreasing accessibility
  2. Blocking access via the #Tor network and #VPNs – preventing people from bypassing censorship and surveillance
  3. Restricting #RSS subscriptions to desktop clients – preventing self-hosting of aggregators, and cross-device synchronization of read status

It both sucks and hurts to see more and more of this, over time.

If you want people to sign your #petitions or #OpenLetters:

Please, now, finally, really, absolutely understand that #captchas do not even achieve what you think they will, they just make your petition less accessible. Avoid these participation killers, they are nothing but harmful to your good cause.

I just gave up on yet another petition, after #Google #reCaptcha prompted me for the fourth time to click on this, click on that.

Don't shoot yourself in the foot.

*I'm not really blind or low vision but rather have other medical issues that have had me blocked from website sign-ups that just allow for 3 captcha tries before a complete lockout.

My overall thing, especially in looking for "best" for my needs in this arena, is that they are aware of this problem & they do have a workaround for it. I definitely want them to fully fix it but I'm not going to be as hard on them as I am so many other entities, especially in the #Tech world & volunteer groups in particular, who don't even acknowledge said #Accessibility problems & thusly aren't even attempting to find/make any workarounds. 🙍 So within the next month or 2, I still plan on starting to support them beyond words.

I expected to find some #accessibility issues; this is the modern web, after all. I did not expect a fully inaccessible visual CAPTCHA with no workarounds. I'm unable to solve it, so I cannot create an account. In short: If you want people who are #blind or #lowVision to contribute to your projects (you do, right?), Codeberg is currently not an #accessible platform.
