Small ant visiting an extra-floral nectary on the underside of a fava bean stipule. Some people are alarmed by the presence of ants on their fava beans but that's only warranted if ants are farming aphids in large numbers. Here's what I made with my first harvest of fava beans. Puréed them with ricotta, mint, basil, garlic, shallots, cream, olive oil, and red pepper flakes. I love broad beans so much. I have been growing a variety from saved seed for the last few years which is tasty and attractive (the seeds have red skins when raw). We've been picking since late November and there's still another week or two in them I think... next year I want to find an early and a late variety and get a longer season.
