Small ant visiting an extra-floral nectary on the underside of a fava bean stipule. Some people are alarmed by the presence of ants on their fava beans but that's only warranted if ants are farming aphids in large numbers. The nectaries also attract lady beetles and parasitic wasps, especially early in the season when flowers are scarce. #FavaBeans #BroadBeans #ViciaFaba #legumes #nectar #nectaries #garden #ants #botany #insects
Fava beans are up! I'm going to plant them at the community garden tomorrow. #favabeans #broadbeans #gardening #legume #GrowYourOwn

Today in gardening news, I got a bulk bag of leaves for mulch. I bagged up some of the old leaf mould and planted broad beans. I found a shabby/apocalyptic chic petroleum memorabilia sign under the old leaf pile. #broadbeans #petroliana #leafmould
Here's what I made with my first harvest of fava beans. Puréed them with ricotta, mint, basil, garlic, shallots, cream, olive oil, and red pepper flakes. Then spread onto oiled, grilled baguette slices with prosciutto, parmesan, whole fava beans, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. #FavaBeans #BroadBeans #food #cooking
How to prepare fava beans: remove seeds from pods, blanch for 30 seconds, cool in ice bath, remove seed coat. #FavaBeans #BroadBeans #ViciaFaba #legume #vegetables #gardening #garden #allotment #cooking #food
Fava bean season has begun! Am thinking of putting them on toast along with ricotta and mint. But am open to suggestions. #FavaBeans #BroadBeans #allotment #garden #gardening #vegetables #cooking
Fava bean season is not too far away and I can't wait. Sowed seeds on November 17th, then another batch went in around February. Of 57 seeds I've only lost one, so it's going to be a big harvest. #FavaBeans #BroadBeans #ViciaFaba #legume #garden #vegetable #allotment
In allotment news, I planted about 50 'Lancelot' leeks in between plants in my row of fava beans. I'm sure they'd prefer their own space but my garden is at capacity already. Fingers crossed that they get along. #leeks #FavaBeans #BroadBeans #allotment #garden #gardening #vegetables
#BroadBeans (Cole’s Dwarf), #Cabbage (Sugaloaf) and purple #Kohlrabi reaching for the pale Autumn sun. The #compost growing medium has crusted over pretty thickly in places after the initial soaking, but they are pushing their way through.
Plant broad beans (fava beans) 2in deep, 8in apart in rows 18in apart. Use stakes for support. Keep soil moist, protect from frost, and consider companion planting with dill or marigold to deter pests. Pinch out tops after first pods form to fight blackfly. #Gardening #BroadBeans
Broad beans are a powerhouse in the garden! Not only do they produce a bountiful crop, they're nitrogen fixers, enriching the soil for future plants. Plus, they're packed with protein, fiber, and vitamins. A true superfood! #BroadBeans #GardenMagic #HealthyHarvest
Spring (Feb to Apr) is the perfect time for planting broad beans! Start them off in pots or sow directly into well-drained soil, in a sunny spot. Space them 8 inches apart & support with stakes. Water regularly & wait for the magic to happen. #GardeningTips #BroadBeans

I'm getting a new flush of flowers on the #BroadBeans, but they are all smothered in #aphids. Might be time to pull them out and make way for a different crop.
