When the past comes back to haunt you. ‘The Danger of Life’ is a fast-paced thriller set in Scotland during World War Two. It uses many real settings, transported eight decades back in time.

This modern photograph shows the Balmoral Hotel, which is a familiar sight in Edinburgh today. Until a few decades ago it was called the North British Hotel and the two central characters spend a night here as the story develops.

I’m so proud and excited for my wife Annie Fox to have received a Kirkus star for her first novel! A Kirkus star signifies a book that stands out for its quality and is considered a mark of excellence in the book industry. It’s a top-tier review that highlights books of exceptional writing and quality. It’s often described as a "Holy Grail" for authors, as it's a sign of recognition from a highly respected source. So cool!

I finally wrote my April #ReadingLog! It's another long one, so I hope you enjoy it! I think a lot of the books in April focused on gender and adjacent topics. May is turning out to be the same, so it's clearly something that's weighing on my mind in a pretty significant way lately.

There's nothing wrong with that, but it's interesting to see in my reading trends.

Quotes from books that are sure to make me choke up:

1. “It's been. My honor.” - Fourth Wing
2. “we made it a good one” - Onyx Storm
3. “Someone you knew in another life, honey” - 11.22.63
4. “I'll find you” - I Loved You In Another Life

Love this advice on life.

“I don’t make all the decisions, you know. I just do the best I can to face what life brings. That’s the secret, you know. That’s the way you change your fate.” (- Aunt Isabelle)

The Rules of Magic, by Alice Hoffman

For FridayReads I'd love to say that I'm reading a novel that I'm really enjoying. But instead I DNFed 3 books this week. In the past I would have thought that maybe I was being too picky and should just push through bad or boring or just not for me right now books. There are literally hundreds of books on my Goodreads TBR list and I'm constantly adding new ones.

My birthday this week is a reminder that I'm not getting any younger and have a limited time to read the books I want to read. I'll never read all of the great books out there, but I can DNF the ones not working for me, so that I have time for more books that I will actually enjoy.

We're delighted to share the cover of Ursula K Le Guin Prize winner Rebecca Campbell's debut short story collection, The Other Shore. The cover art is BC artist Kerry Pagdin's "The Death of Ostara," a perfect match for Campbell's unsettling west coast speculative fiction.
