I was finally able to beat my previous high score from December 2019 in ‘Number Match’ at the beginning of this month. I’ve also finished reading two books so far in August:

📖Cackle by Rachel Harrison (ebook library loan)

I had a fun time reading this one. I loved the burgeoning friendship between Annie and Sophie, and Ralph is oddly adorable. The epilogue felt right to me too.

📖Hammered by Lindsay Buroker (ebook bought in 2022)

Decent characters and world-building for an urban fantasy, but didn't really feel like a self-contained story in terms of the plot development. Will likely pick up the second book at some point and see how things progress.

‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ by Matt Dinnimin.

Kind of has a ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ meets ‘The Running Man’ vibe to it.

Some of the humour just didn't work for me (ableist vibe, or just kind of gross). Overall, the story knows what it is and delivers on what it promises.

Princess Donut is the star of the show and the reason why I would probably read more in this series, but I'm not in a particular hurry to try to catch up.

‘The Moon on a Rainy Night’, Volume 1 by Kuzushiro.

Absolutely loved this first volume in what I'm hoping is going to be a beloved series for me. Originally picked it up thinking that it would be a good one to tempt the Teen to read over the summer, but honestly think it is just done so well that I'm keen to read more for myself.

Disability representation is wonderfully woven into the fabric of the story, and the nuance of someone being deaf without complete hearing loss is very welcome.

‘Elizabeth and her German Garden’ by Elizabeth von Arnim

I found this book quite charming (though, being the musings of an upper class lady published in 1898, the classism is a bit discomforting in places). Also, please note that there is one moment when a young child is described as being careless with a kitten in a manner that feels cruel and certainly unpleasant for the poor kitten, but it is mentioned only briefly.

As someone who is introverted, and finds the lingering habits of guests wearisome, I find this account of a woman finding solace in her garden strangely relatable (despite not being good with plants myself) and feel like this might be considered an example of a woman entering her hedge witch era.

‘Cat + Gamer, Volume 2’ by Wataru Nadatani.

I’m continuing to love this manga series about an inexperienced cat butler learning the ropes whilst trying to balance her duties with work and her existing gaming hobby. Just gentle and wholesome vibes with snippets from the cat’s point of view.

The series comes with Twiglet’s approval too!

‘Bridget Jones’s Diary (And Other Writing)’ by Helen Fielding.

This was the last book left unread from my Yuletide presents, so I’m glad to have gotten around to it within a reasonable timeframe. I definitely liked the diary format, but it does kind of suffer in comparison to ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾’ by Sue Townsend (which I personally prefer and find more relatable). I think that this is possibly just one of those situations where I prefer the compressed storytelling of the film adaptation, and found the book a bit repetitive and drawn out in places.

‘The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy at All, Vol. 2’ by Sumiko Arai

I borrowed the second volume of this manga series from my Teen. The story is still enjoyable in this second volume, but there was just a bit too much teenage angst for someone as old as me and I felt a bit frustrated with the main characters at times. Feels quite representative of teenage girl drama and insecurities though. Love the side characters!

‘How To Be Ace: A Memoir of Growing Up Asexual’ by Rebecca Burgess.

Definitely the kind of book that I wish had been available when I was a teenager. Graphic novel format keeps it moving along at a decent pace. Good balance of personal memoir and broader supportive information. The author clearly set out to write the kind of book that would have been helpful to her younger self and was able to achieve this goal.
There isn’t nearly enough ace-spec representation available, so I’m really glad to have stumbled across ‘How To Be Ace’ and would recommend it. The story also depicts struggles with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), negative thought spirals, and issues related to self-worth and low self-esteem. The subject matter is handled sensitively, so this would be suitable for younger teens as well.

‘Cat + Gamer, Volume 1’ by Wataru Nadatani

I bought this manga volume because it was featured in a BookTube video by ‘Gavin Reads It All’ and I have a particular soft spot for black and white cats. This is such a gentle and wholesome story of an inexperienced cat butler learning the ropes whilst trying to balance her new duties with work and her existing gaming hobby. There are snippets from the cat’s point of view as well (adorable). Has a similar vibe to ‘My Roommate is a Cat’ (which I haven’t read but loved the anime adaptation of). Will definitely be continuing this series.

‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾’ by Sue Townsend.

I hadn't re-read this one since my early teens, and it really hits differently - and is so much funnier - reading it now as the parent of a teenager. There are some things that reflect the time period that it is set in and was published (early 80s) that are uncomfortable, but I didn't personally find these to be a barrier to otherwise enjoying the story. References to racism and misogynistic viewpoints are likely an accurate reflection of society at the time (I didn't read the book until almost ten years after it was first published, so I don't really have any relevant personal memories of British life in 1982 beyond music and a vague memory of some major events such as the royal wedding being on the telly) and don't come across as being supported by the author.

Still worth reading as both a snapshot of the time period and an accurate reflection of the teenage condition.

‘The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy at All, Vol. 1’ by Sumiko Arai

Borrowed this one from my Teen, and found it to be surprisingly wholesome, though it is always so funny to read about modern teenagers viewing themselves as edgy and alternative just for listening to the music that I grew up with. That being said, I do feel like this kind of story definitely resonates with teens who don't feel like they quite fit in with modern social pressures. I feel like those of us who grew up in the 80s and early 90s had a lot more role models for walking our own path and just being ourselves even if that didn't quite fit in with our peers. Would have loved to see some references to icons like Annie Lennox and Skunk Anansie, or later stuff like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but perhaps the author was either unaware of their influence or didn't care for their vocal styles. Happy to see a non-toxic friendship/crush depicted alongside the message that it is okay to be yourself and to dress in the ways that you find comfortable and enjoy the things that bring you joy.

In the spirit of continuing to try to make better use of the library system and to cross books off my long-term TBR, I saw that a book I’ve been wanting to read for about five years was available digitally and decided to make it my first book review for June: ‘Semiosis’ by Sue Burke (published in 2018).

This one is about colonists starting a new life on a planet they call Pax, and explores the challenges that the colony faces as well as the alliances they form with indigenous species.

If anyone hasn’t picked up this one yet, the vibe is somewhat similar to the more recently published ‘Alien Clay’ by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I enjoyed both stories, and found them interesting but not particularly inspiring if that makes sense.

I know that not every story can be, or even needs to be, something that blows your mind - and ‘Semiosis’ is definitely much better than a lot of stories - but it lacked a truly alien feel to any aspect of what could have been a fascinating exploration of a vast intellect spanning generations. The book moves along and deals with issues that face the colonists through the lens of a character from each generation. In some ways it felt kind of like Asimov’s Foundation series but with Hari as a plant system.

This is the first book in a trilogy, and I would recommend giving this one a read if you like stories where humans have to try to survive on a planet where we are the aliens - just don’t expect anything too deep.

Kirjaa ei tehnyt mieli laskea pois käsistä. @kirjailija_kaisaikola_viitala on onnistunut upeasti kirjoittamaan kirjasta toimivan kokonaisuuden gaelinkielisten sanojen ja lauseiden täyttämässä tarinassa! ✨️

Lukiessa edelleen ihastutti Agnesin sopiva itsepäisyys ja toisaalta myös monimuotoinen tunteiden ja ajatusten sekä omien (Agnesin itse määrittelemien ja myös ulkopuolelta kerrottujen) heikkouksien itsetutkiskelu. Kirjasta ei puutu draamaa ja huikeita käänteitä eli lukeminen oli ajoittain suorastaan jännityksensekaista tuskaa. Agnesin ja Fingalin suhde sai kirjan myötä rauhassa syventyä, mutta ei ollut ihan samalla tavalla kirjan keskiössä - lähes kaikki hahmot kokivat sellaista myllerrystä ja kriiseilyä, että eipä tuo ole ihmekään! 🫣

Klaanin suojeluksessa raivostuttavan ihastuttavan Lilyn elämään pääsee ihan uudella tavalla kiinni "Toisin silmin" -lukujen kautta. En halua spoilata mitään liiaksi, mutta sanonpahan, että luvut avaavat hyvin kriisissä olevan ihmisen päänsisäistä maailmaa. Lilyn lukuja lukiessa oli välillä ihan kamala jännitys (kirjan lukeneet tietävät, mistä puhun) ja samalla täysi järkytys monien hahmojen puuhista. Mitä epätoivoa ja väärinymmärrystä tarinassa koetaankaan!

Onneksi Nummien kutsu-sarja jatkuu jo keväällä 2026 seuraavan kirjan merkeissä! Kirjan lukeneille kysymys: Muuttuiko siun käsitys Lilystä tämän kirjan aikana? 😇

Dogfish, Wild Geese, The River, and Starfish are definite favourites, but the haunting end to The Journey really hit me:

‘But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,

into the world,

Enpä muista, milloin olisin suomeksi kirjoitetun kirjan lukenut noin vuorokaudessa alusta loppuun! Kirja etenee ainakin miulle tosi tasaista ja mukavaa tahtia, ja en huomannutkaan kun yhtäkkiä luin ensimmäiset 200 sivua. Kirjan luvut ovat mielestäni sopivan mittaisia, eivätkä ylipitkäksi venytettyjä, kuten joissakin kirjoissa. Olen pitkien lukujen ystävä tietyissä teoksissa, mutta tässä kirjassa lukujen mitta oli juuri nappiin! 🤩

Pidin myös kovasti Fingalin (Toisin silmin) numeroimattomista luvuista, joissa pääsi näkemään tarinaa toisesta näkökulmasta. Agnesin ja Fingalin välinen kitka ja molemminpuolinen salattu rakkaus laittoi kyllä kääntämään sivua ja odottamaan jännityksellä seuraavaa käännettä!

Kirjan päähenkilö Agnes on ihanan tavallinen ja sopivan itsepäinen itseään koskevissa asioissa. Oli huikea lukea päähenkilöstä, jota ei ole yritetty kirjoittaa kaikin puolin täydelliseksi ja kaikessa aina onnistuvaksi. Agnes ylittää itsensä kirjan aikana monta kertaa ja osoittaa, että haasteista huolimatta hän kyllä selviää!

Tässä vielä teille lisähoukuttimeksi kirjan alkupuoliskolta lause, joka kuvaa hyvin kirjan ajatusta: "Kuka nyt tahtoisi mukavan, kohteliaan nuoren miehen, kun voi saada vaarallisen, villin ylämaalaisen!" 🥹✨️

Miun onneksi sarjan seuraava osa on jo tullut ulos eli seuraavaksi pääsen sen kimppuun! 📚 Onko tämän sarjan kirjat jo siunkin listalla vai oletko jo kenties lukenut ne? ..
