an Eastern white cedar. i'm usually not partial to deadwood junipers / cedars, because they all start to look the same after a while, and i don't like the bleached lime sulphur look. but i liked this one for the beefcake trunk. imo the deadwood looks natural, and it's not overdone. the pot and stand are good choices as well.
another favourite was this Hinoki false cypress, which was part of a shohin display. i have a soft spot for the smaller trees...the giant ones that take all the awards can get so big they hardly count as miniature trees anymore.
my favourite Jack pine returned this year. these trees are hard to come by...unless they're deliberately shaped, they're not generally considered attractive for gardens, so nurseries don't appear to carry them. but the small needle size makes them good for bonsai; i'm guessing their weaker apical dominance also makes them easier to deal with.

i bought some more dignified handmade pots for my mame jade and its accent plant at the Toronto show. these pots are made by Sophie Wang, of Cambridge ON: https://www.sophiespottery.ca/about . i decided to get out the good camera for the occasion.
it's just a little jade, but i'm really enjoying its development. it's come a long way since the big chop last year.
(some people might not dig the elephant, but dangit, even bonsai has room for fun in it)
Want to see some beautiful trees? Take this walk with Peter Chan around his nursery.
i also liked this (comparatively) young Japanese maple. there were others with thicker trunks, but they lacked the flowing taper that you see on a full-sized tree. it would have been nice to see more of the rootbase...maybe it's still under development?
Went with my sister to Bonsai Bai Me, and walked away happily with a Schefflera. I had a Schefflera over a decade ago and loved it and I’ve been wanting one ever since it unfortunately died in someone else’s care. #schefflera #bonsai #utah #pleasantgrove
my favourite was actually this linden tree. even though it has fairly large leaves, it has a nice structure, and this structure is visible (i.e. not obscured by foliage). the roots are nicely flared and detailed. the tree will only improve in the future, i think.
this crabapple was also looking nice
edit: i have been informed that this is an azalea, not a crabapple
went to the Toronto bonsai show...this lilac was in the 'trees in training' section.

strawberry kusamono update
it's been raining constantly for the last two days. the plants have enjoyed it. the strawberry kusamono sent up a flower...i may have fruit if the rodents don't eat it. i may get a better picture once the rain stops.
