In his sermon on the mountain, Jesus taught:
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.“ Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭5,7

The teacher of Proverbs writes:
”A gentle answer turns away wrath... The soothing tongue is a tree of life...“
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭15‬:‭1‬, ‭4‬ ‭

Jesus emphasizes the spirit of mercy:
”But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,“
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭44‬ ‭

Jean Daille wrote the Apology of the French Reformed Churches. He writes on redemption & care for each other (Col 1:14 & 1 Cor 12:25-27. Christ is nothing but sweetness and love. Knowing that he lad down his life for his enemies, how can we hate and perceute our brethren?

In how many Reformed churches could one say, “Christ is nothing but sweetness and love” in a bible study.

How can you love and persevere your brethren?

Beginning a study on the word “compassion” in the the Hebrew Bible. The root word is רחם (rachum) and it’s only used as an adjective 13 times in the Old Testament. A couple interesting notes:

1) it’s the first word God uses to describe himself (Exodus 34:6)
2) 12 of the 13 uses are to describe God. The 13th use is an exhortation for what we ought to be (Psalm 112:4)

The word is used a bunch more as both a noun and a verb, and I’ll be studying those use ages next!

“We know, in fact, that God works all things together for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose”. Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28 NTFE (N.T. Wright, New Testament For Everyone)

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,
in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.“

Nicky Gumbel similarly wrote, “… often we cannot work out what is going on or why we are suffering in the way we are. But the claim of Jesus and the Scriptures is that behind it all is the love of God. Even though things may seem very difficult for us to understand now, God is working out his loving purposes in the world. God can weave a pattern from the threads of our lives – including the suffering, heartaches and even our mistakes and make something beautiful…”(Rom.8:28) #biblestudy

In today’s devotional N.T. (Tom) Wright shares, “God's spirit comes to dwell in the midst of his world in the persons of Jesus's faithful followers. But that world is in great pain. The Spirit inhabits that pain and calls out to the Father from within its darkest depths by means of God's people being in prayer. This painful vocation is at the heart of God's rescuing plan for the whole creation”.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.“

Today’s verse references Isaiah 25:8 - ”he will swallow up death for ever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The LORD has spoken.“

”Peter and the other apostles replied: ‘We must obey God rather than human beings! The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead – whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Saviour that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. We are witnesses of these things…’
… they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.“
