A joke led me down a rabbit hole and I realized it knew nothing about the man except his name.
Interesting guy who it seemed had trouble conforming:

The satire writer was probably Honoré de Balzac when it comes to many supposed quotations. Balzac ghost-wrote a book of ~500 of Napoléon's maxims, one of which hit the news a while ago when #DonaldJTrump quoted the author of La Comédie Humaine. #Balzac made many of them up.
This quotation appears to have come from someone who is recorded as not being present when the conversation took place.

Es fehlen, wenn ich richtig zähle, noch 15 längere Romane und ein paar Dutzend Erzählungen bei meiner Comédie humaine Lektüre, also in Summe wohl eher 18 Monate als 12 #Balzac
Endlich mit Eugénie Grandet durch. Was für ein seltsamer Roman, dessen Hauptfigur letztlich irgendwie das angesammelte Vermögen Grandets ist. Wenn ich richtig zähle, war das #Balzac Nummer 41. Mal schauen, wie lang das Ganze noch weitergeht 
Habe in Balzacs "Le cousin Pons" die bizarrste Erklärung für das Phänomen der Fotografie gefunden und frage mich nun, ob das gängige Meinung war, aber würde auch gern einmal ein Rabbithole einfach an mir vorüberziehen lassen (und ja, ich stelle sie mir als herumwandernde Energiesauger vor) #Balzac
PS das erklärt immerhin auch diverse abergläubische Meinungen zur Fotografie besser als "neue Technik = Teufelszeug"

I'm on Balzac #35 (La cousine Bette), having finally finished Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes after a month or so... it had very good parts and lots of silly stagecraft: accents (Carlos Herrera's Spanish inflections were too much even for the writer, but Baron Nucingen gets pages of tedious German-accent dialogue), double/triple assumed identities, double crossing and lots of desperate swooning, not to speak of the body count. Looking forward to a, erm, more intimate revenge story #Balzac
