Does anyone else have their apple machine reboot on them willy nilly? My air m2 does that after I have been afk for a while. Instead of waking from sleep, sometimes it just decides to restart. Obviously forgets all the windows and the desktops they were assigned to.

So frustrating. It's such an absolute shitshow of an OS. I wish I didn't have to use it for work :(

Another complete screw-up by EventBrite.

Last week I tried to reserve a ticket at an event and the "Reserve a place" button never showed up in either Firefox or Chrome on Linux.

It did in Chrome on Android on my phone.

Now I've tried to reserve a ticket for another event run by another organisation and I've had exactly the same symptoms.

EventBrite has one reason to exist, and they are complete screw-ups.

If you want reliable ticket and event management ...

Don't use EventBrite.

If you don't care about your users ... fine, do what you want.

PS: Yes, I'm angry.

This post might seem like it's about #brightspace (the #lms the #suny system is forcing us all to use), but it's actually about having bosses who hold you in such contempt that they can't even be bothered to explain why they paid millions of dollars for a product that doesn't work while telling you to use it or else.

Today's Brightspace issue: hundreds of questions with images (trapped within BS's little walled garden of impenetrable database locations) that appear only as placeholders, but might or might not render when placed into a student quiz. The odds seem so far to be about 50/50.

There is no way to know which items are affected *even when I edit each of the hundreds of items by hand*, because I see this placeholder for MOST of the questions but then the students sometimes see the image. Sometimes not.

It's silent failure. No flags, no checks, no indications of what's wrong. No way to know if any changes will fix things.

Other silent failures: BS will cheerfully tell you it has imported your 5,000 or so items (painstakingly created over the past decade) from your previous LMS--which was also mandated--and then just *won't tell you* that hundreds or thousands of them did not import because BS simply choked and pooped or because BS doesn't even have the functionality to use those question types.

I fucking hate this LMS, but I really hate the fact that the people in charge think so little of me and 30,000 of my colleagues that they shove shit like this at us and tell us to pretend it works.

How can I convince my employer that it is for their best benefit that they supply me with a Linux laptop? I'm done with Window's slowness, insidious OS background processes that liberally take 50% of my CPU, random restarts, and a constant barrage of updates that do nothing but make the computer worse than it was before.

Not to mention WSL 2 eats all of my RAM by simply staying idle 🙃

I just LOVE error messages.

nmcli dev wifi con "SecretSSID" password "supersecret"

Error: Connection activation failed: Secrets were required, but not provided.

The universe is laughing.

In reality: The wireless connection attempt times out (for reasons still unknown to me, and the log files won't tell me either) and nmcli just assumes that the password is wrong or missing. Like a politician: If you don't know what went wrong, just blame someone else.

The company I work for uses a particular bit of software to manage its HR needs; things like time tracking, org chart, leave management and the like. The HR People _love_ it.

It. Is. Garbage.

It is so poorly designed, labyrinthine, and inflexible, that I want to make a better thing, but I don't want to spend my time on such soul suckingly boring work. Yes, part of my job is to make tables pretty and ask people questions and a lot of that can be boring, but this would be worse.

If you use the #Geany editor, don't press CTRL SHIFT V. Under certain circumstances, Geany will segfault and you can say goodbye to all your unsaved work.

The bug report is from 2021 and it is still not fixed ...

Workaround: In Edit > Preferences > Keybindings, bind CTRL SHIFT V to whatever you want.

Just had a company who sold us a software product tell me that the install and config documentation is proprietary and they can't provide it to me as the customer. I'm not sure how to respond to that except to laugh in their face (which I did).

Part of me wonders what horrors lurk in that document. What terrible things are they doing that I can't know about?
