This is true, but I am here to say that there are old, extremely contaminated mine sites on the outskirts of larger cities in Europe and noone cares. You would be amazed at the mental hoops people will jump through to ignore the necessity of remediation.
My favorite: arsenic contaminated drinking water is actually good for you.....
No shit this is actually something I hear when I talk to landowners at some of the sites I work at.

@cafechatnoir @nora you’re probably right about the water, I just wanted to pop in here to remind people that just because something is sold in the store in the US doesn’t mean it is safe and free of contaminants

For example, I learned that the equate brand of Metamucil (the #Walmart store brand) was tested by consumer labs and it had so much #lead in it that if you were using it as directed you were exceeding the safe lead levels. And personally, I don’t really want to consume any lead even if they think the level is safe.

Some of the vanilla flavor protein powders that are sold contain #arsenic and I don’t remember why. They claimed to be within safe levels but I would prefer not to consume that either.

There is a fascinating and literally lethal book « Shadows from the Walls of Death » that documents specimens of wallpaper known to contain arsenic, made to warn people about the dangers of the wallpaper. The book is made from the actual wallpaper so is just as dangerous. Archive.org have a scanned copy archive.org/details/0234555.nl and from it i have made 3 palettes for my colour font-in-progress. Green features prominently because i think it's the green pigment that contains arsenic.

#ClimateChange brings increased amounts of #arsenic in #rice.

"Concomitant increases in #CO2 and temperature resulted in a synergistic increase of inorganic arsenic in rice grain. The observed increase is likely to be related to changes in soil biogeochemistry... Modelled consumption of rice under these conditions resulted in projected increases in ... cancer and #health risks for multiple Asian countries by 2050."

#ClimateChange will make #rice toxic, say researchers
Eaten every day by billions of people and grown across the globe, rice is arguably the planet’s most important staple crop, with half the world’s population relying on it for the majority of its food needs, especially in developing countries.
Warmer temperatures and increased #carbondioxide will boost #arsenic levels in rice. arstechnica.com/science/2025/0

#US #wildfire suppressants rife with #toxic #heavymetals
Study reveals widely used pink wildfire suppressants contain high levels of toxic heavy metals: #cadmium, #arsenic, and #chromium, concentrations up to 3,000x above #drinkingwater limits. While gov and chemical makers have long concealed up to 20% of suppressants' ingredients as "trade secrets" researchers have confirmed their role in environmental #pollution, raising concerns over extensive use in residential areas

SFGate: Tigers, zebras and other stuffed animals will get new homes after health concerns kept them hidden. “Crocodiles, monkeys, tigers, zebras and dozens of other taxidermy animals will move to new homes after concerns about arsenic exposure forced the closure of the South Dakota museum where they had been displayed for decades. De l’arsenic dans les déchets électroniques
🔴 "Environ 100 000 tonnes de déchets électroniques entrent au Canada chaque année depuis l’étranger pour être recyclés. La vaste majorité provient des États-Unis (73 %), de l’Allemagne (18 %) et du Brésil (6 %), sans nécessiter de permis. La plupart s’en vont à la Fonderie Horne."
